Good vacation getaways for a weekend... Know any spots?

Ok so this is my first year in 8 years where I won't be taking a weekend off and going to ACEN which is a big anime convention in Chicago. I live north of Detroit so it's a half a day trip by car but I lost interest last year and kinda grew out of anime so I decided not to go but am looking for another place to take a weekend away with the girlfriend but I need ideas.

I'm looking to spend about a grand or less for both of us for 2-3 nights. Looking for something not too far by bus/train/car and not in Canada because of passport reasons ect.

Anyone know a good spot or live in the area and know a place nearby that has some fun stuff to do?

Also for those who have those vacation/booking sites, which do you recommend?

Why don't you go to Chicago, and not go to a mouthbreather convention? There's probably one or two other things to do in the city on any given weekend.

I've been there half a dozen times through various trips over the years with family/friends outside of the conventions and want to go someplace new. Chicago is great but not on the 15th visit.

what are you looking to do during the weekend, other than fuck? any major US city will have great stuff to do any day of the year. if you lived on the east coast I'd say hit up london or paris for the weekend since you can do that on the cheap, but probably not out of detroit. http://us.lastminute.com/ is fantastic.

    edit: get a passport

Just want something fun to do for a weekend to get away. If I go to Europe I'm going for more then a weekend and going to enjoy myself. This is more of a thought in the last week which isn't enough time to get a passport but there is also plenty to do in the states. Thinking maybe checking out newyork and pay my respects to ground zero but I don't know yet.

I'm a native new yorker, if you pick the city I have a million suggestions.

I'm sure you could do a weekend in vegas for under a grand and have a blast. Even though you would have to fly.

as some one who drives from just out side of NYC to sterling heights a bunch of times during the year, i can say FUCK THAT SHIT it's a 10 hour drive + if you get traffic in PA because of road closers.

personally i would go to Chicago and jump on a train and have n train trip. Go out to Colorado for 2 nights.

A few money-saving tips about Amtrak..

    - Buy your tickets AT LEAST three weeks before your trip - you'll not only get a discount for advance booking, but they've also been running special discounts that can save you up to 20% on certain trips.
    - Buy your tickets Tuesday-Friday. The prices go up a bit on Sat/Sun/Mon.
    - If you're a member of AAA, in the military or are a student you can get special discounts.

Oh yeah, use the money you save to book Business Class seats. Reserved Coach is almost ALWAYS packed to standing room (at least it is in the Northeast Corridor).

I was going to say windsor before I saw that you don't have a passport... How about Frankenmuth? I've heard they make good candles there. It's Michigan's "little bavaria"... closest thing to the Hofbrauhaus this side of the motherland. Well... except for Hofbrauhaus Las Vegas and Uberstein Chicago.

    www.frankenmuth.org

    They have:

    Lodging!

    High School Sport Enthusiasm!

    Entertainment!

    And last but not least...

The largest Beer Festival in Michigan on May 20th & 21st!

If you're close to Detroit, Delta probably has last minute weekend fares for cheap. It might require you to leave on a Thursday and come back on a Monday, but depending on the weekend you pick you could get a great deal. The down-side is the deals vary by week so no location might come up you want to go to (and you would have little time to plan/take off work). I got great deals on American and United weekend special fares.
