lol @ school lunches being anywhere near the realm of "healthy"

I'd venture to guess that eating 100% (cane, aka "real") sugar is healthier than most school lunches

The best part about Capri Sun was being the first kid who learned how to apply the straw without ever fucking it up.

    Hit it from the bottom?

I'd be pissed if my lunch was healthier than the schools lunch.

You could flatten the top with your index finger then just punch the straw straight down rather than at an awkward angle. Takes all of two seconds.

Seeing the amount of corruption in Chicago, this does not surprise me in the slightest.

For those of you that live IN Chicago, Devon alderman Bernard Stone is probably the best example (among MANY MANY MORE)

This alderman approved for alleyways to be BUILT ON TOP OF. Literally entire sections of garages were blocked off from exiting their alleys because construction of buildings on where alleyways once were started occuring. This was out the consent of any of those individuals that lived in that area and used those alleys as a means to get in their garage and out of their garage (is there really any other way besides an alley? At least in a city)

Second Example the same alderman for an individual in my Internal Auditing class stated that when he owned a cell phone business it took him literally TWO YEARS to get his sign for his establishment and the only reason he did was because he eventually met with the alderman and had an undisclosed cash exchange.

I could keep going on with different Chicago official employees, the amount of corruption in the City of Chicago in general is just disgusting.

edit: I'm sure the arguement will be made as the article is geared towards its for health reasons. Clearly it isn't as there would never be a ban on the allowance of taking home food if this was the case. If anything but their main concern was literally increasing revenues for the school and/or the vendors (I don't know how much of a profit the schools make if any? Although it wouldn't surprise me if the school makes no profit and then someone is receiving some sort of gratuity or kickback) then they easily would have considered the option to allow food to be brought in if it was the criteria.

Eh? You just put the straw in your mouth before you stab the packet.

Also, I found it hilarious how many kids at my school qualified for free/reduced lunch yet didn't claim it. lol @ fake-middle-class-rustbelt-pride

Combined with the fact that the Government doesn't really know what is nutritious (ie. "Fat" isn't the problem, and still recommending more than double the carbs needed in a day) this is possibly very dangerous...

Itt: Noone knows what this school's reformed cafeteria menu looks like, but it's obviously terrible just like everything else the government does because that's how my elementary school lunch was 15 years ago.

I wouldn't give a shit how healthy a schools "reformed cafeteria menu" is. If I felt like making lunch for my kids on occasion simply from a gesture of love then the school can eat a dick.

Something tells me you don't live in the city (lol Devon alderman, the fuck is that?) and like to spout of corruption lines based on an tale you heard from someone. Additionally, I have no idea what you're trying to say in your paragraph about alleys. He let someone build something on top of an alley? What?

I love how this post completely goes off the wall and has nothing to do with the thread at hand about school lunches. School lunches are left to the mandate of the principal of the school. CPS does not have a district policy on this (except usual nutritional standards) and this is the only school in the entire district that does it. If you would have read my post on the previous page you would see why this school does it.

Some people re:most in this thread is fucking retarded and the knee jerk reaction is actually pretty funny.

Lets get rid of health class and the hygene curriculum because obviously parents can teach their kids this! I grew up in little village and I know for a fact 90% of these households both parents often work and the shit they feed them is horrible. When you're struggling and need to get all the kids ready and still have to get ready to work you dont exactly go for the healthiest foods you go for what's fast cheap and what the kids won't complain about eating

Btw lets comment about how terrible school lunches were 15 years ago! Let's also keep perpetuating the myth of how hospital food is terrible!

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

while I agree that the food they are serving is probably healthier and people shouldn't assume it isn't, there are some flaws with your statements. For one: parents can actually opt out their children from health class, so bad example. secondly: if the parents don't have time to make lunch....then they are probably already buying cafeteria food. it's faster to give the kids the $3.25 in the morning than it is to run to McD's.

My only issue is the taking away the choice.

This. CPS has made strides in their school lunches and launched a campaign last year to get to high healthy standards via the Let's Move initiative.

No, I don't work for CPS, but they are light years ahead of many school districts on the whole healthy lunch bandwagon.

I'd take my children out of that school in a jiffy.
Don't care what's on the menu, this is despicable on several levels:

    - Liberticide.
    - Lumping good parents with bad parents.
    - Going entirely the wrong way about things. In an age where feckless parenting is on the rise in most western societies, the last thing to do is deresponsibilise parents.
    - Blatant money-making scheme hidden behind a thinly-veiled health excuse.

Wow... people getting this upset because of lunches? My kids have hot meals at school every day, there is no such thing as a home packed lunch. Of course Korean schools are much better funded than US counterparts... and there's definitely "PE" more than once a week as well... Seriously, I remember what I used to get in packed lunches in school in the US, and what my friends had in their lunches and what is still marketed for that purpose to this day, just about any hot meal the school could provide would be 50-100% better than what most parents packed for their kids, and cheaper too in the long run. Even here where the obesity rate is something like 2% in adults there are news stories about how many times a week kids have ramen for dinner at home (some kids get ramen 5x a week, thus the rising rates of obesity in children).

People in the US lately are all about freedom, freedom to do stupid things with their money, with their lives, and with their children's lives. Nanny state is an appropriate term, and so many people really need a nanny because they have no idea how to properly take care of themselves, let alone their kids. Maybe if they're raised better from the start then they'll have fewer problems when they grow up, needing less help in the future...

Ever more glad I'm not in the US right now... I think South Korea's education system is still in the top 5 in the world.

I'm all for the cessation on unhealthy obese fat-ass kids whose parents don't feed them right, but this is out of line.

The choice has to be taken away as it's the only way in this situation that kids are going to eat the food provided by the school. It's really no different than a school uniform.

You give up your right to choose in exchange for your kid getting exposed to something more than Kraft Mac 'n Cheese. Most parents straddling the poverty line are forced to feed their kids out of boxes so anything that can perk up a kids interest in healthy food is a boon.

If you allowed parents to make the choice, most people would bring the usual packaged shit to school and whatever healthy options would most likely be turned down due to a mix of peer pressure, ignorant parents or general waste. You're gonna be pretty thankful for the lunch in front of you when it's all you have to eat even if you don't like it.

My only concession with this is that the parents (the few that actually show up) should be involved in creating the menu served at the school or involved in some way. I don't trust the govt as much as the next guy but the arguments against this are silly.

Then it really isn't a problem is it? While they can opt out of health class they can't on the course on hygeine. Its actually mandatory because of the potential effect on the kid socially and other students. You would think people would be up in arms over that.

Its not about bad parenting. its about them doing the most with what they have available to them. this is an impoverished neighborhood there is no June Cleaver in little village believe me.

what fucking strides have you seen this country make in responsible parenting? the Overwhelming majority of this country is below or right at the poverity line and we are the fattest country on the planet

Do you know what blatant means right? should probably be complaining to your parents for not investing in a dictionary.

My comment was more spurred by the statement that the lunches offer "low-fat" dressings, like they are any more healthy for you. Fat isn't the problem, calories are, and more specifically calories from too much carbs.
