Ference could have easily taken one little step to the side to avoid the hit. Sure, Halpern is a little guilty for not watching where he was going, but he was focusing on the play so you can't blame him entirely. The fact that Ference actually leaned into and raised his shoulder for the hit is indisputable.
Sidenote : To anyone that ever comes to Vancouver. The Roxie is where Canuck's and most other NHL teams party. Top40/rock music full of slutty white chicks and old party goers in there 50's.
Actually it is Ference's duty to not ram his shoulder into his opponent's head, particularly when they're miles away from the action.
But thanks for playing.
NHL rulebook dude.
"A player is allowed the ice he is standing on (body position) and is not required to move in order to let an opponent proceed." - that's the rule on interference.
"48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted."
Tough to call a check to the head when Halpern initiated contact. Ference did not have to move, and was entitled to the ice he was on.
But keep thinking it was a penalty.

Oh god this is going to be fun.
Please tell us your thoughts on the Pacioretty hit.

Reckless disregard for other player's safety. BUT THANKS FOR PLAYING.

LOL if I recall, Chara got an interference call on that one. The reason was Chara moved laterally cornering Pacioretty into the stanchion, as a fan of a team that's seen forwards and centers get boarded into concussions while the offender gets 2 game suspensions (if at all), calling the Bruins dirty is just so friggin amusing.
Good example of why one was a penalty, and the other is crying for a call.
How the fuck can you call it reckless? Ference reacted to a man skating right at him. Shit, he had a disciplinary hearing about the hit, and he didn't even get a fine... the same guy who got fined for flipping the bird didn't pay a cent for that hit, that's how NOT dirty it was. Enjoy the offseason.

You can call it reckless because instead of taking the easy option of not leaning into an unsuspecting player, he make an unnecessary and dangerous hit. Also bringing up the result of a meeting with the backup disciplinarian in the NHL isn't exactly what I would call exonerating evidence.
Telling me to enjoy the offseason doesn't make any sense either.
Because he had no reason to shoulder him in the head?
He recklessly decided to shoulder the guy in the head.
He saw him coming, he saw that Halpern wasn't looking, he could have pushed him away, but he decided to shoulder him in the head instead.
If that isn't reckless disregard for player safety I don't know what is.
Do yourself a favor and read anything but BG on the hit... you'll see people with far more ice time than yourself talking about how it was incidental contact, part of the game, Halpern should've kept his head up, etc etc etc.
You guys make me laugh. Regardless of what you might think, the official standard for dirty/clean hits are determined by the NHL. If their ruling was that it wasn't dirty (which can be seen in the lack of fine/suspension, not to mention no penalty on the play), then that's the decision the league stands by. This isn't to say you shouldn't have an opinion on the hit, I'm saying you should relax on criticizing this guy, especially when he's citing the NHL Rulebook made to decide the ruling for this particular play.
