That is backed up by several people in the Wings organization saying that they are staying put through next season, though after that it is up in the air as far as realignment. THAT statement should probably be prefaced with the Wings' desire to move to the East, and (apparently) Bettman and several others saying that the Wings will be given the first opportunity out of the West to move into the East.

Good god, Detroit in the Eastern conference? Be curious to see if they're perennial conference champs or if they become middle of the pack as soon as Lidstrom retires.

Winnipeg in the SE would be such a clusterfycj next year. Not only for Tampa/Carolina/Washington/Florida, but for the entire East. The Atlantic still has to travel to Manitoba 4 times a year if they're in the East.

That's bullshit, I don't see how you could break up either the Atlantic or Northeast divisions by squeezing Detroit into either. Nashville to the Southeast and Atlantapeg to the Central seems the most logical.

I'd see Columbus or Nashville getting moved before Detroit. The likelihood of them taking away 6 Wings/Hawks matchups a year and sticking Chicago as the lone Original 6 team in the West doesn't seem high to me, when generally at least 2 of those matchups are expected to be fatty NBC Sunday ratings cows.

edit: I've been seeing Minny to the Central instead of Dallas in most places, Nashville to the Southeast, Jets2.0 to the Northwest.

Which I think the owners are fine with. Lots of Canadian rivalries in one division.

Looking at that map its hard to tell who would have to travel more between MIN and DAL if they weren't in the Central.

I'm still in favor of them returning to the named divisions instead of geographical, that way they can just put teams whereever the hell they feel like and not have to worry about it making sense geographically
