Refs can't catch everything that happens on the ice and the point of the disciplinary board is to catch and punish bad hits and dirty plays. Did Bobby Ryan get a penalty for stomping on the NSH player's foot? Should he have gotten off scott free if the refs missed it?

He got four for the other hit. Six if you count playoff games as 2 each. I think 4+ playoff games. I would be way harder but I hate seeing no talent hacks like raffi or cooke injuring big time players. shit, I'm a Caps fan and I loved Dale Hunter but I think he got off easy with a 21 game suspension for his hit on Turgeon and it was a completely different NHL back then. (look it up if you dont know it)

Ok I watched the DVD and there is a hit that's almost identical to the Torres hit and it's one of the examples of a legal hit to the head. Video is found below and said hit takes place at 3:07. It's not behind the net but it's along the boards where the contact is head on with the player looking behind himself to receive a pass.

So if you go by that I don't see how you could possibly suspend Torres for that hit.

You can suspend him because the NHL doesn't want to make it seem like behind the goal line is free game. They did the same thing by not being proactive on the Richards hit last year, and it essentially led to the end of Savard's career without a suspension in sight. You can also suspend him because he's literally done similar shitheaded checks in 2 consecutive games.

Whatever happened to the good old hip check? Or the anvil ass? If you have someone skating through neutral ice with their head down, and you're in position to demolish him, how the demolishing happens is up to you. Not the guy with his head down - he has no control over the situation, and voluntarily gave up control by not paying attention.

People not paying attention deserve to get plowed. But it's time to get "Flying Elbow" out of the list of available options. I think the problem is flying elbow is too easy, too tempting. If you miss a hip check, you eliminate yourself from the play and look like a complete fool. But you can leap a good 3 ft left/right with the ol' flying elbow. You're practically guaranteed to make contact of some sort.

Case in point: Game... 2 of Van vs Chi, not 30 seconds into the game, Sharp is trying to get out of the zone and he gets brick walled at his own blue line. It was a monster hit. And the hit was all body. Need to see more of that and less elbow music

The point was that the Richards hit went unpunished, so that when Cooke hit Savard the league said they couldn't punish that because they didn't punish Richards for a similar hit. You know, setting a precedent.

The answer to "how are you supposed to hit him when his head is down" is you don't.

If you can't make a clean hit, you aren't allowed to make the hit.

Problem is players will constantly skate with their head down...there lies a point where the players have to take care of themselves too.

That's like MMA saying "you cant strike an opponent in an unprotected area".

Uh, did I say anywhere that this was the case? No. If it was reversed and a Hawks player absolutely crushed Torres with the same type of hit, I would still say that whoever threw the hit should get a suspension because of the circumstances involved with the hit.

Nick Kypreos has been pretty good for breaking the number of games players get suspended and he tweeted the following.

"Hearing no final decision yet from NHL regarding Canuck Torres hit on Blackhawk Seabrook but look for no further discipline for Torres"

Awesome, so that means I get to listen to another 24 hours of people bitching about NHL decision making. Well I guess that would be the case if he was suspended too. Honestly I'm just sick of it all and would gladly sacrifice Torres to make it go away.
