As long as it's not on Fox with the dot. All should be well.
How I was looking at was that it might be better to be a big fish in a (slightly) smaller pond, rather than losing out to poker tournaments on ESPN2.
Based on that quote, who has Bettman been talking to that told him coverage has been terrific? If Comcast/NBC is serious about this then why do we still only get 100 games a year, with the amount of money they are paying out, they should be able to put a game on every day. If the NHL wanted to grow, they would tell NBC Sports to air as much as their schedule allows, and spread games out across the channels owned by NBC.
Ideal situation for all parties would be to air a game every night on Versus, sometimes two games...do an east coast or central game, and then a west coast game, but make sure they air different markets so the casual fan can see different teams instead of the same group of eight that get national coverage. Put a game of the week on Saturday night until it moves over to NBC on Sundays with the Winter classic, given football is running through the start of hockey, it does make sense as to why NBC's coverage always starts late in the year.
Plus if Versus gets rebranded to become NBC Sports, they would change up the programming I would assume and get rid of some of the crap currently on Versus, which could free up more space for hockey. Not to mention Pierre McGuire and Mike Milbury need to go, but for some reason Dick Ebersol of NBC thinks they bring something to the broadcasts. If they got rid of those two clowns and provided more coverage, NHL would no doubt gain a lot more casual fans.
If you got rid of McGuire, how would you learn the junior and pre-junior hockey genealogy of every random 4th line winger to ever step on the ice.
And the size of Chara's stick.
While the new TV deal seems like a step in the right direction, there are still too few nationally televised games. It looks like the NHL still won't be on NBC until late in the season like it is now.
Just putting this here for the record, so there's no accusations of foul play:
