Grammy Awards to Honor Video Games.

Don't know where to put this but here you go.
    From the Yahoo game blog:

The Grammys are getting into the game.

The Recording Academy, which oversees the annual music awards, has made changes to four of the ceremony's categories, putting video games on the same playing field as television and movies in an effort to solicit more submissions from the industry.

"Many people from the game community have been asking us to create a special category for games over the years, but the main reason we haven't is because we have received very few entries from game publishers," Bill Freimuth, vice president of The Academy, told IndustryGamers.

With last year's win by composer Christopher Tin, though, that's likely to change.

Tin's 2010 Grammy for the track "Baba Yetu" was an industry first, but a bit confusing since it was first released in 2005 as the theme song to the strategy game, Civilization IV. At the time, the song wasn't eligible for consideration, but when Tin included it on an audio recording in 2009, it met the criteria -- and won.

Tin won his Grammy in a different category than those affected by the new rule changes, so this wouldn't have helped him all that much. But effective this year, four categories are openly welcoming submissions of video game music:

    • The Music for Visual Media (Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)

    • Best Compilation Soundtrack for Visual Media (Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)

    • Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media (Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)

    • Best Song Written for Visual Media (Motion, Television, Video Game Music, or Other Visual Media)

"Every year, we diligently examine our Awards structure to develop an overall guiding vision and ensure that it remains a balanced and viable process," said Neil Portnow, president and CEO of The Academy. "After careful and extensive review and analysis of all Categories and Fields, it was objectively determined that our Grammy Categories be restructured to the continued competition and prestige of the highest and only peer-recognized award in music."

    Was I reading that wrong, or was he saying;
"People want us to create a category for video games so video games could be submitted, but not many people have sent in entries for a category that doesn't exist, so we haven't bothered."

    also; lolgrammys

    Are the grammys important?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

In fairness, not to the average viewer, but I bet the actual people involved consider it pretty awesome to get a grammy. So, more power to them.

To the common man? Probably not. However it'd go a long way in terms of street cred for video game musicians and ultimately would be better for the industry as a whole.

It's really just one more step in video games inevitable ascension to worldwide recognition as a legitimate medium.

It'll eventually happen. Stuff like the Spike Video Game awards are just paving the way for it.

The key is how to get geeks interested when the whole essence of geek is to resist the mainstream. An academy awards of games is no different than the current wankfests geeks loathe but I guess it could be accepted if it was put together in a way that you know... avoids being extremely corny/embarrassing to watch.

Or they could just throw Sessler and Webb at the helm

i wonder if the games would be considered as much as the more mainstream things, though. i can see the people that watch the grammys (most of the ones i know that do are total ditzes) being irritated that something they've never heard of winning over their favorite whatever.

Can go on and on.. I just think most of the categories could be made to apply to video games.

Think of all those gaming scores that were denied their grammy.

One-Winged Angel is not a bad song at all. The song, like any other has just been praised and played to death so many times that everyone is tired of it already (See: Freebird, Stairway to Heaven for reference.)

My mom broke my PS2 years ago over the intro to Crono Cross because she kept hitting reset to hear it. This is a woman that hated games but could listen to the soundtrack for hours.

The entirety of the Halo 1/2/3 Orchestral soundtracks come to mind.

Actually this might be good timing. Mitsuda is working on Chrono Cross Orchestral Soundtrack and it should be out this year. ;o
