Heavy Book 3 spoilers. Seriously, don't click if you haven't read it. BTW is there a book thread?

    Spoiler: show
I'm about halfway through and just read the scene with Edmure and Rosalin's wedding. What the fuck is this shit? On one hand, I can't believe Robb and Catelyn are both dead, but I admire Martin for being able to kill off characters that he's been building up for almost 3 books. I had to reread it like 5x because I couldn't believe what was happening. I feel pretty bad for Arya, too. She was almost back with her mother and brother.

That chapter is still one of the best things I've read in a long time. Going back and reading it brings out emotions that most books have a hard time touching. I love recommending the books to people and seeing their reaction when Ned dies...the dragons are born...and that. Such a great bit of storytelling.

There's something I don't entirely get after reading book 5. Tyrion joins the Second Sons willingly but has to sign all those contracts promising gold and land to just about everyone in the company. Why does he need to do this? Is it JUST to prevent Plumm from bringing him across the seas to his sister? Plumm, in my opinion at least, doesn't seem like he would have had any intention of doing that anyway since he was busy fighting for either Yunkai or Mereen (whichever made more sense to him obviously). I know Tyrion did it part in jest just so he could join the Second Sons and get safe harbor and eventually alter the course of the war, but it just seemed odd he would have to pay everyone to join when normally groups like the Second Sons pay people to join them...I think? Am I over analyzing or am I missing something here?

Well, the contracts can only be paid out once Tyrion takes charge of Casterly Rock. So, he's not buying his way into the Second Sons.. he's offering them a bounty.

I think Tyrion, at this point, has only one goal in mind: To hurt the Lannisters... and the very best way to do that is rid the Lannisters of all the riches beneath Casterly Rock.

I think his resolve in carrying out this goal will be tested by his long lost uncle's reappearance in some shape or form (the favorite uncle that went to Valyria).

he's totally buying his way into The Second Sons. Brown Ben Plumm initially tried to buy him at the slave auction to send back to Cersei for that lordship but upon escaping Tyrion seemed to convince him of the danger in such a path and that a far safer bet would be extending his protection to Tyrion and attempting to use the little lord to both switch sides back to Daenerys and come into wealth once they all take Westeros.

why did Ben do it? because he could. Tyrion had absolutely no leverage and would have been killed for a runaway slave if Plumm had turned him down. Plumm took some minor risk in protecting him and forsook the chance of a lordship, dude wants to get paid.

So I've been re-reading the books, and I'm partway through book three, but I've been mulling some stuff over and wanted to share some speculation. Spoilers from book 5, as well as earlier.
    Spoiler: show
Tyrion becomes King. I am absolutely convinced of this, though I have no idea which kingdom he gets or how he gets it. The reason for this is in the scene where he's talking to Jon Snow outside the great hall in Winterfell, right at the end, Martin says something about his shadow looking like that of a king's. Given how well he played the Game of Thrones (You win or you die... and he's still alive, even after his "fall.") and his general awesomeness, I think he will be King.

I don't think Jon stays dead. I'm not sure how it will play out, but I think the Flame of Life or whatever it was that Beric had will find him, and I think Longclaw will become the Sword of Light. It's Valyrian Steel, I doubt some flames are going to ruin it like they did with Beric's sword (Or am I getting him confused with Thoros's old wildfire swords?) Melisandre will have to give him the kiss of life for this to happen, and I think she would. She's shown before that the Lord of Light is cool with working through unbelievers.

Sam Tarly is going to be big shit. I don't know how exactly, but he's going to find some sort of power at Oldtown and become not just a maester, but also the master of whatever power it is that he finds. Maybe a sorcerer? Seems right up his alley. Maybe he forges a magic hand for Jaime that actually works? Also, the maesters are up to something. Sam's going to find out what, probably to his sorrow.

Dany is going to come back with a khalasar. Drogon is big enough now to nom on some horselords, and the dothraki respect strength. She will crush the armies arrayed against her, and go east to Asshai for some reason that escapes me. Quaithe isn't telling her east for west and south for north for no reason, she's gotta do it eventually. Also, Dany is wrong about Jorah's betrayal being one of the three. It happened before the warning. Now that she's banished him, though, he might betray her for love.

That's all for now. I'll have more as I continue making my way through the books again and the story is more fresh in my mind. Martin has a knack for dumping your expectations on your head, though, so I dunno.

Tyrion, hard to say, he's never aspired for power other than Casterly Rock. I don't see him choosing to be a king, but it could happen. To me it seems like he's be of use to Dany, should they ever get formally introduced, and might make a logical person to leave in power in Meereen/etc while she goes off to take Westeros.

I'd also be inclined to say that Jon won't stay dead. It's already been established that people can be brought back (such as it is) by the red priests, and he's got the most prominent one in Westeros right there. By dying, he'd be released from his Night's Watch vows, opening up other possibilities (though losing him would seem like it'd just throw the whole wall into chaos).

Dany is hard to speculate with, because she needs so much to happen if she's going to be established in Westeros after another two books (the presumed finale). Going back to the slave cities to kick ass and claim a navy seems likely though.

Dany sits the throne, not sure who she marries. Tyrion sits Casterly Rock with a whore for a wife. The Wall falls d/t the horn and the Others invade westeros. Jon dies (but he's not dead yet, he's going to mount one of the dragons, he is a Targaryen afterall). Bran takes over Winterfell after he controls the third dragon.

That's how I see it going down.

I think Jon has died, but will live on in Ghost. Hence the foreshadowing of the dying wildling warg with the 'second life' in the prologue.

    I don't like it, but I think that's how it'll go down.
