that's actually pretty interesting, especially given that mormont told jon at some point that a high septon offered to release aemon from his vows so he could be king

We don't see him for five books and then he shows up as the head of a religion he doesn't believe because... revenge? For some reason being the only person in Westeros that wants to see Jon on the throne? Howland Reed being some sort of magical, super secret agent is silly.

We aren't talking about Meribald. We are talking about the group of Sparrows that Brienne encountered from Rosby to Duskendale. She was with 2 hedge knights, Ser Creighton and Ser Illifer when they come upon the group of Sparrows headed for King's Landing. The "possible high septon" among the Sparrows was urging Brienne and the knights to join them on their journey to KL.

easy to get mixed up, but just to clarify, brienne hasn't been north of the neck in the show, either. she and the hound fight near the Bloody Gate, en route to the Vale of Arryn.
