I was commenting on you thinking that third-person cameras zooming when colliding with terrain is "a thing of the past," which I noticed you since edited out.

Even though there have been a handful of games that do it, there's a bit of a fourth-wall issue going on with making terrain go translucent. I don't think it's important as long as you can move the camera to either side when your back is against a wall.

I don't either. In games with a target lock on system like XIV, it shouldn't be a problem at all.

Camera collision hasn't been much of a problem for me at all. The only time I distinctly remember getting annoyed at the camera was when camping nms, and that was because I wished there was a slider to adjust camera speed to be faster or slower.

Translucent walls and cameras that ghost through geometry can be messy, and for the most part avoided unless the environment team has spent extra care making sure what you can see isn't entirely off-putting and gruesome. Frankly it just looks weird, but there are better ways to handle it. My camera experience is limited, so I couldn't tell you all the options or solutions out there.

Well I figured out last night, that if I just unlock off the target, my camera does not go bat shit, and I can still control it and keep the more "over-head/behind character" view. It's works fine for now, but really hope it is something they look into fixing. Also, I think a lot of the problem is that I'm LaLa, and when being locked onto the target is what cause it to go bat shit and I lose total control of the camera. I might look into fraps or something and make a video, this is not some thing that "happens with most games"

Truly glad you don't have this issue, but it's a lot more than just "zooming in if you clip a wall."

Hmm, my only problem with the camera thus far is that it tends to shake whenever I run down a hill or go otherwise downwards. On anything flat or going upwards there is no problem. I think that's just a bug though.

Maybe the size of the monster causes your camera to tilt downwards towards the ground due to the height difference between you and the target and shit hits the fan?

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I maybe crazy, but I could swear that used to happen in FFXI too, and you would fix it doing exactly what you said (take off lock target). I dunno if it's something that's fixable only because as some said, most games don't use the same kind of lock target the ff series use. Dunno how they would change it. (<3 having lock target).

Hopefully we get a full fix for that soon. Watching my camera/name bounce around going down a slope is annoying.

It was/is in 11 too, it's due to how auto lock fixes your camera up at a position higher than the normal "center" in front of your char that you'd expect. The camera has to try and tilt up in a game where tilting up isn't really what the camera naturally does. (Dhlamels and big NMs in ffxi are a good example. It makes things hard to see mainly cause you're pointing into space.) They could fix it by just making the target lock based on character height at the position of the mob instead of a fixed point on the mob (and would especially help if they didn't put target points way up in the air like the head of certain tall mobs) I play lala so I noticed this a lot too. In either game just not using auto-target on mobs that have weird camera positions for auto lock won't mess everything up.

haven't had this issue, are you.. playing a lalafell? I could see it happening with them since their so close to the ground the camera would be hitting all kinds of things on the ground area

It happens to me on my highlander and roegadyn. It doesn't even have to be on hills, it can be on any type of terrain. It only happens when I use the controller however, as when I use a mouse I am in full control of the camera and I am usually forcing it to maintain a constant elevation as I change its angles while playing.

The camera will spazz out and bump up and down extremely quickly as it "drags" across terrain even if its not low enough to be on the terrain. Like its "running on invisible legs" behind you.

Worst part about the camera is the lack of left click to rotate it without moving the character direction.

Well I'm glad everyone seems to know what I'm talking about and it's not just me. I was going to upload a video... but my upload is terrible... sorry

Edit: I have done all the side-quests in Ul'dah and Grid so far, will knock out L.L. tomorrow. If anyone is on the fence about coming back, I would at least give the side-quests and new NMs a try, I have had loads of fun the last two days just doing them. The side-quests have some really good lore if you're in to that stuff and gives you a idea about whats going on in the world and how things came they way they are.

I have been staying away from the game because I found the controls to be too frustrating. I tried Gamepad, Keyboard, and Keyboard+Mouse and nothing felt comfortable. I was really excited when they mentioned fixing the arrow keys to control camera (or at least making them bindable so we could do it ourselves) but then the team change happened and that has all but disappeared.

At this point has everyone just adjusted to the new control scheme, or are we still holding out hope that they will change them?

I think most people are hoping they change them... I havent seen a post on the forums about it thought. ;/

I expect new controls for keyboard/mouse when they release new UI for it.

I hope so, I really like the changes they have made so far and have even been tempted to log back in here and there to check out the changes but as soon as I start playing and fighting against the control I remember why I stopped playing and log out. It doesn't matter how great they make everything else, if the controls suck, people aren't going to stick around. Of the three types I have found mouse and keyboard to be the most tolerable but still far from perfect.

To be honest I am surprised they haven't really mentioned anything about it. It is going to be hard to make some difficult, engaging content if people are fighting the controls and the camera. You would think they would be focused on improving controls along with everything else. I am hoping that they just aren't mentioning it because it is a given that they will fix it and are instead just doing it and not looking for feedback. Somehow I doubt that is the case though

I don't know, after like a day or two of playing you become pretty used to it. it's not perfect but its far from the worst control i've seen in a MMO. I wouldn't be devastated if it didn't get touched as long as they were putting out HQ content and fixes for other things. It feels stupid to settle for stuff, but at this point I just want the game to start meeting my expectations in other areas first :3
