Sorry for the bump. New info about the console's innards. A tad disappoint.

Somehow I expected this but its still disappointing. GPU based on 4870 is a tad old no? lolLet's be upfront here: we don't know thing one about chipsets and motherboards. We play video games, we don't build the hardware they come on. But our friends at Engadget, well, they're all about that kinda stuff. So when they tell us that Nintendo's Wii U console will come packing a custom Radeon GPU with a chip similar to the R770, and that the chip is competitively stronger than the GPUs of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, we believe them.
Additionally, the chip is said to run DirectX 10, and is capable of handling four SD video streams -- presumably only one of those streams will be necessary, however, given Shigeru Miyamoto's statements about the WiiPad. As GAME Watch points out, the Xbox 360 was limited to a variation of DirectX 9, while the PS3 employs OpenGL APIs. But now we've gone right off the deep end -- what we're trying to say is this: the Wii U has a pretty decent graphical processor. Or, more simply, Wii U games will look good, and likely even better than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games. There, that wasn't so bad!
In a way it is smart though, because releasing so far in advance of other consoles (before they have been announced) will make people compare it to the 360 and PS3, rather than the upcoming consoles which would likely be far superior to it. This way they can say they are better than their counterparts, despite the fact that being better should really be a given considering how much later it is being released. It will likely get a good amount of positive press that it doesn't deserve for doing something that it pretty much had to do.
I'm really wondering how this will affect the timing of Nintendo's next console, and how it will affect that console's sales.
And that game lineup is far too good to be true.
Wow, so the leaked information with regards to the GPU was damn near exact. Now we just need to find out which end of the RV7xx spectrum this GPU is closer to: The 4890, or the 4530.. the leaked information said it was similar to the 4770, which is still much faster than the GPUs in the 360 & PS3, plus it'll run very cool since it'll be on a 45nm process compared to the Nvidia & AMD GPU's in the PS3/360 (which are on 90nm... which is a large die + power hungry)
So the WiiU isn't anywhere near as powerful as the latest gen of PC videocards (Not even as powerful as Last Gen: i.e. Radeon 5 series/Geforce 4xx series), but I guess this is Nintendo's MO after all.. they are at least being competitive with the graphics this time around. This system should have pretty badass graphics for a console
Indeed it's old, but consoles are about as "Close to Metal" (meaning, in this sense.. Nintendo's developers will get the most out of this card compared to a PC Game developer which has to program through an elaborate API) as you can get
Basically, assuming it's a 4770 (or 4870), the games will run better (read: higher framerates) on the WiiU and probably look better, than if they were on PC due to the fact that a console doesn't have to deal with a bloated operating system or heavy API with which the software has to go through to communicate to the hardware, it'll be much more straight forward. Which is totally unlike how the PS3 works, but Sony fucked that up just like they did with the PS2
edit: delete pls..
Fucking Nintendo and their bullshit propietary mediums lol

They are blowing it more and more every time they open their mouths about the Wii U.
The leaps in graphic technology have slowed way down in the last few years, I remember when you had to upgrade to a new video card almost every year to play the newest games. A single Nvidia GTX280, over 2 years old, can still play the latest and greatest PC games on high settings @ 1920x1200.
Nintendo was pretty smart, when the Wii came out having a 1080p TV was still a minority. We will be at 1080p for a while yet and above all else Nintendo is trying to make money, they made a profit off every Wii console - can't say the same for Xbox360 and PS3.
While Nintendos response may have some truth to it that most people own a dvd/bluray player at thia point imo it still alienates them. I have blu and dvd players in my house but they never get touched. Why? Because I would rather use one system for everything (PS3) for games/dvd/blu/netflix. Instead of having to buy multiple platforms for my bedroom and my kids that I would have to try to stack or make room for I put in a PS3 in each room and problem solved fuck having 3 players in each room when 1 will serve the purpose better then them individually.

I don't entirely disagree - I use a PS3 as my DVD/Blu-ray player as well - but I'd rather have them focus on the core functionality of it as a gaming device. Now, granted, it's Nintendo, that extra cash is probably just going towards their war chest...but in theory it could be letting them finalize the specs with more memory or something. We can hope anyway.
I know it's not the case but when I hear high density, I like to picture it being like darkmatter in futurama.
I don't know, you mentioning it reminded me that proper Netflix support may alleviate the concern for actual disc-support more than it would seem.
This is a good point actually, as long it supports netflix and/or other streaming sites like hulu then only supporting the proprietary disc media is a non-issue to me. I'm honestly more concerned about the games that will be on the system since my PS3 is used for all my blu-ray/dvd needs.
hell as long as it lets me put stuff on a flash drive and play it. really wish a console supported .mkv files.
obviously, that's not the point though, the point is "man it would be convenient if a system already hooked up to my TV could conveniently play the files without having to convert them"
Xbox360 can play mkv files if you have a Windows 7 media center on the network
