Meanwhile the Wii looks like shit on HDTVs.
I'd pay good money for consoles build around playing older games (like, actual copies I already own) in an enhanced way. Not simply backwards compatibility, but renders at higher res/etc like emulators have been able to do. I doubt Nintendo wants to do that though. Not when they could try to re-sell me games I already bought a decade ago.
Considering the Wii had backward compatibility with Gamecube software and the other players in the console business offer it to some extent, it makes you wonder if they will make this a feature of the next console. If so, I really don't see them offering something other than another gimmicky system with "enhanced" motion controls that I really can't get into, much as I love their first party titles. I blame all of this on the Power Pad.
I agree with this and really hope that time table is close to what happens. I am happy with my PS3 & 360, and developers have yet to hit the ceiling with those systems. The longer this generation goes and makes money the better. Hopefully it will mean more dev. time for the new systems to release with less issues/defects, better launch lineups, and a big enough leap in technology to warrant the purchase of these systems.
If you've ever seen games emulated on Dolphin (Monster Hunter 3) for example. They look like completely different games at higher resolutions.
Spoiler: show
I'm going to laugh though if Nintendo drops the ball again on specs.
Yeah, I dunno, I've only used my PS3(s) on displays capable of 1080p. I could definitely see them not testing things on old tube TVs as much though. I have issues with mine dropping the picture for a second every so often when feeding through my receiver, but that's about it.
On the other hand, I had plenty of consoles hooked up to my HDTV when I first got it, and they're all pretty bad - even with games that support Progressive Scan on the PS2, the aspect ratio never quite seems to be right. It's one thing I like about using the PS3 for PS2 games - things appeared "correctly" with no fuss.
As above though, existing Gamecube and Wii games can look very nice if rendered at higher resolution. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1144081 has a few other shots for example. I know for me, if their next system can do that with my existing games, I'd buy it on that virtue alone.
For real man, these systems are perfectly capable of using emulation to enhance visuals but they choose not to allow it for whatever reason. I don't like playing PS1 classics on my PS3 when I can play them on my PC and make it look better. :/
As for this Nintendo HD... I'm not touching that shit with a 10 foot pole until I read reviews about it, and see some decent launch titles and how their online is. I bought the Wii day 1; stood outside of Toys RUs for 7 hours... biggest mistake ever made.
I'm really looking forward to more information. They aren't locked in place like MS and Sony are with the current gen, they can probably put out something even a little more powerful with tech now available while still maintaining a low price point (something they've always been big on doing, iirc). Gives them access to the multitude of multi-platform games from it's release onward (maybe even some that are released before it, if they're shopping around for devs already, idk), and even if their only exclusives were first party (third party exclusives would come if it did well) they'd still have a pretty solid lineup. People can knock them, but they usually tend to do really well, and if they're finally putting out stronger hardware along with even a little classic Nintendo "innovation"/gimmick, they'd have even more options available to them.
I actually feel pretty excited about this, after thinking it out, it seems like it might finally be something that gets some real gaming titles back on a Nintendo system. My biggest concern is actually their online management, and what they plan on doing about it, and I'm probably just as interested in finding out what they're going to do in that regard as I am to the actual specs the machine will have.
Wii was well worth it for me. Twilight Princess was good, Galaxy was one of the best games of the last generation, and I can't even estimate how many hours me and my friends spent playing Smash Bros, Mario Party, etc.
Yeah 3rd party games suck on the Wii (Monster Hunter 3 and Resident Evil remake besides) but I don't buy Nintendo for 3rd party, I buy it for the 1st party games I've been playing since I was a kid and I can't get on another system.
Comparing a $250 console with near zero fail rate to 360/PS3 is laughable, Nintendo's hardware may be behind technology wise but their quality is godlike. My original gameboy still works and I don't know how many times I've dropped my DS. I'm on my 4th 360.
TLDR; Nintendo has been in the business of making games and toys while making a huge profit, not complete living room media centers. They do what they do well. They made money off every Wii sold from launch day. Meanwhile Sony was selling $1200 to produce PS3s for half that.
So they will release a new system, 1-2 Zelda, a Mario, and a bad Metroid game again? I am never getting suckered into buying a Nintendo system again as long as I live.
They need some STRONG 3rd party support and a STRONG system to compete with the hardcore crowd.
They do have quality parts going for them, at least.
Jim Reilly (IGN news director) is tweeting a bunch of crap about Wii 2 atm.

I stoped careing for Nintendo consoles after I got a gamecube. There is just no 3rd Party support at all. I want to play games and as much as I love/loved Nintendo games (Zelda, Mario, etc), they are just too few in between. So I switched to Xbox 360 for the next generation, and XboxLive was just amazing! So many games, so many Arcade games etc. (newly developed ones).
I skipped the Wii, and I am glad I did. There is/was no game on the Wii I really wanted to play. Nintendo has to catch up in Online-Modes/Online-Departement and get massive 3rd Party support if they really want to catch my interest, otherwise its just gtfo. and nope not gonna buy it until I really see the support on it, aka gonna wait for 1-2 years after its release and then decide.
Monster Hunter 3's online system was pretty awesome, the capability is there.
You could just not be poor and buy all 3, not like Nintendo consoles are expensive.
That's fucking retarded, I have multiple PS3's and 360's and PSP's etc in my house, why the fuck would I waste my money on something I would rarely if ever play when I can put it towards shit I would actually get some use out of?
And just because something does "well" doesn't mean it's worth a fuck, doesn't take much to win over naive parents who don't have a clue what there doing with vidya games in the first place.
I really don't want to read wall 'ol text right now. Why all the Wii hate suddenly?
i've always liked the Wii but that's because i don't like Shoot em up games so XBL was something i just laughed at
