Uncle's computer is god awful slow

Ok, so my uncle asked me to look at his computer this morning and it's going ungodly slow. He said it started yesterday.

So I ran spybot and it wouldn't launch, so I ran the computer in safe mode, ran spybot and malware bytes and removed all malicious shits. Restarted went back to regular mode, same problem.

Ran a restore point of 2 weeks ago, problem still there (at which point I did spybot and malware bytes again).

So its still going slow as shit and he doesn't have a recovery disk or partition, so I'm not sure what to try at the moment.

    Edit:

This, make sure he doesn't have anything important that he isn't willing to lose first though

Could be a rootkit, try combofix and see if it picks up anything. Definitely back up everything first, though.

Run hitman pro, remove the malware it finds. Uninstall everything non-essential. Disable services that are not essential. Go into msconfig and remove non essential startup tasks, clear out startup folder. Reboot.

If you can't do this without fucking it up, buy him a mac.

That's the problem though, as said before, I don't really have anything to reinstall with.

If I download an OS, would I be able to boot it from a usb external HDD?

I don't, unfortunately. And all of the windows 7 I see on demonoid are larger than standard DVD anyhow. Unless theres a way to downsize it?

I'm not seeing that, unless they come with extra stuff like SP1 they are all under 4.7 gigs. But if you have an external drive you can just use that. here's one of many guides : http://www.pcworld.com/article/16515...ard_drive.html

Did he install any programs on it recently? My aunt was convinced into buying an antivirus and after she installed it her computer ran slow as shit. A quick uninstall was all it needed.

Not to my knowledge. I had one of those myself and there def wasn't anything like that. And I ran the system restore to over a month ago, where as he said it didn't start slowing down till yesterday.

And by slow, I mean 5+ mins for my computer to open.

The desktop at my house has this same problem and it seems nothing can fix it. The only thing I can think of is severe corruption from many many viruses over the years. The only thing I haven't tried on it is complete reinstall because there's so much stuff that we want to keep and have no where to put it.

I'd run a disk check in while you download. Sometimes causes issues like this if something is corrupt.

Wow good job ignoring my post. "Hey guys I'm going to request help and selectively ignore people. especially from the guy who works for an IT remote support company"

Wasn't something I was willing to take the time to do(as following your instructions woulda taken a fuckload of time and my uncle had nothing he wanted backed up). Firefox alone took 5-7 mins to open, as well as clicking the address bar and typing shit into it. Pages took 5 mins minimum to load, etc.

So I taking a torrent windows 7 and installing from my external hdd.

Had nothing to do w/ ignoring anything.
