TERA won't be big in the west. Aion got to us first, and poisoned pretty much everybody over here. Thats an incredibly large fuck up than Tera needs to overcome. A lot of people are gonna stop caring when they hear its korean, no matter how fun the gameplay is. Most people won't even give Tera a chance. Best thing that they could do is have an incredibly open OBT like Rift had and let people try the game out for themselves. I'm hoping they do that because i'd like to try it but i'm not going through the loopholes and high costs to play Korean retail when NA launch is a few months away.
My thought exactly.Maybe that statement could be true for the hardcore MMO crowd who've finally grown tired of the punishing thousand-hour grinds to achieve glowing pixels, but not for the rest of gamers out there who look forward to potentially innovative and FUN(hi, FFXIV) new MMOs.
The point of an MMORPG should be that of an "online" RPG, and I dont see why that should become obsolete, as much as multiplayer FPS or beatem-ups should.
What went wrong in the past years is that the concept of MMORPG became that of an extremely, repetitive and long ass game where anything should take weeks to achieve. Any new title that's sticking to this false dogma is doing very bad at the moment, FF14 as an example.
GW2 looks like it's trying to get back to the idea of an RPG game where you play with other people, and Bioware's SW looks like they finally made singleplayer content more than just a repetitive and dull quest list. We'll see what these brings, as well as Yoshida's FF14.
Most likely staying with XI for the time being. We'll see in the next couple years. I'm sure by then my life won't be able to support another MMO.
I think the main idea that Tanaka had in mind when creating 14 was to replicate a game that would stay alive and doing fairly well for another 10 years. However, with the abundance of MMO's that are hitting the market people can just jump from one MMO to another. Right now we will probably see alot of games like Rift that have great lunch and keep you entertained for a month but than you move on to something else.
Man, I won't deny that TERA's gameplay looks fun but some of you are beating me in the level of fanboy fanatism for that game. What our personal opinion is won't make or break the game, chill out.
I don't think gameplay has ever played the major role in a success of an MMO before, so it'll be interesting to see where that takes TERA. I'm not really happy about them outsourcing to Frogster in EU though.
If blizzard gets their shit together and stops prolonging content after 4.3, the next WoW expansion. If not done with MMOs they are all disappointments.
As much as I detest WoW, I acknowledge how great of a game it is, and quite frankly, if that was in this poll, it'd prolly be winning. : (
As for TERA in the west, vrumpt is correct. Too many people here with the fucked up Korean hate mentality planted into their heads cuz of Aion. That won't stop the game from being amazing though. I, for one, am -all- over that shit.
Lol, whatever. Latest numbers are under 250,000 subs which is below KR lolAion, and by all accounts the servers are empty except for round-the-clock bots. Most are waiting for balance fixes/content to be added. If you want to fanboy it up by saying how rushed it was for KR and how much better its gonna be when its released here.. fine. But I didn't really think the 'bomb' part was up for debate.
Although Aion is the freshest pain in people's memory, it's not just Aion. It's the fact that you can't be lured away from a capped, geared character from one MMO to climb korean-style MMO ladders. At least you can't and not burn out if you expect to play on the same level in the next shiny new korean thing.
Nah, there's no fucking way I'll play another mmo. Tera sounds somewhat interesting because it kinda sounds like a bastardized MH (from what I've seen anyway, could be wrong). The fact that is korean already destroyed w/e low expectations I had, if any.
Where the heck are all these TOR voters? Thread hasn't been bumped in so long. I want to start recruiting for once there's a release date but I wasn't even gonna bother asking BG based on the presumed level of interest on these boards.
Anyhow, looking forward to TOR the most. Have been for years.
Warhammer 40k looks interesting. Not under EA so it might actually have a chance to make it.
Done afer I eventually stop FFXI.
Though if that new PSO turns out to be good..
I'm interested in seeing what EME does to combat this type of speed bump, don't forget they're working on westernizing the game and making it more palatable for us NA/EUs. I'm hoping that EME has some sort of trump card up their sleeves, like a robust open beta, or a decent ad campaign. I will admit that they're going to have to put in some work to convince a lot of people to even try the game, it's not enough to just market it as a targetless MMO, and hope their fans will be able to spread the word.
By all means keep your expectations low, but at least give TERA a shot before you put the last nail in that coffin.
