I had a similar problem, neighbors above me partying until 5am, I had to work at 8am. Asking nicely didn't work, complaining to management didn't work.

Busting out a sander and a metal tailgate at 9am (Noise Ordinance here ends at 9am) worked. (Of course they weren't insane like it sounds like this guy is, just buy a gun and make sure he knows you carry it everywhere).

Also had a similar problem once, except my girlfriend went behind my back and reported the guy without so much as saying a word/asking me to. Kinda her fault, but w/e. He was huge and black so I can understand the fear. Anyway he found out, pounded on the door and threatened. From Brooklyn, and not a single fuck was given.. that kinda thing. Went on for a bit, and he eventually got arrested and put away on some other shit and was never seen again.

    Hope this helps.

Just so you know in the future, this is illegal in a lot of states. Apartment or not. If there's a disturbance you report it to the landlord first. If they are not available, it goes to the local authorities 90% of the time for legal sake.

when I lived in Madison Wisconsin I lived in a studio apartment with paper thin walls, my neighbor apparently had the hearing of a bat, he would leave notes on my door almost daily complaining about my music, which I was trying to be civil with, first off he complained that he worked nights, which for him meant getting off work at about 10pm, I on the other hand worked 11pm till 7am, it got to the point that I could barely hear the words in the music while sitting directly in front of the speaker, I couldn't turn my tv on, hell I could barely breath without him bitching, so I contacted my landlord, explained to him my situation and that I was going to contact the police to find out my options, landlord was fine and said they have been getting calls from this guy almost daily about me, and had issues with this guy before I moved in, so I called the police and found out that I could literally be as loud as I wanted from like 8am to 7pm, then after that noise just needs to be kept reasonable, so of course neighbor comes over to complain in person, he threatens to call the cops, me being calm tell him I'll save him the trouble and begin dialing the police myself while explaining to him everyone I've talked to, all I've learned, and that I saved each of his lovely notes that were left on my door, he quickly changed his tune and was never a problem again

Skip the bullshit call the cops. Once you get 3-4 reports go to the front office and say that you've called the police and give them the reports(you can call the main line for the closest police office and they can email you the reports in PDF). The front office will then give them another warning. If there are subsequent warnings from the police you can request that they evict them.

I don't know about Madison but in places I've lived, playing your music as loud as possible even at noon can still be considered disturbing the peace.

Same here, there is no noise ordinance during the day here, but there is an exception for "Excessive" noise. If I can hear my glasses rattling in the kitchen from the other room and this goes on for 4-5hrs at a time then they said that falls under "Excessive".

And yea I realize the note thing was bullshit on my part, but we had it done to us when we first moved in because our dogs were barking at the cable installation guy, and I found it very polite to get a warning first before somebody turned you into management. And this guy has 5-6 people over at a time i've noticed so I was a little uneasy about knocking on his door and telling him to turn his shit down.

well I guess my apartment really rocks, sorry for all you people with shitty neighbors. worst I've gotten so far is some guy last weekend playing Lady Gaga pretty loud, although if I moved over to my computer area and turned the TV on I couldn't hear it anymore.

gotta love old-school brick walls, shit's solid.

not that I haven't been there, people used to park outside my old place with music blaring at 3-4 AM. although that stopped once I wrote down the guy's license plate as he was watching - simple, subtle, effective. anyway, point is, I sympathize with you while simultaneously laughing at you from my brick-walled fortress of solitude.

I've never had a problem with knocking on someone's door and politely asking them to turn it down a notch. Then again, I live in a dorm on campus/apartment around campus so most the time it's just another college student who has no problem turning it down a bit. Y'all must live in some shitty neighborhoods if you're afraid of a neighbor. And honestly, the note thing would definitely kinda irritate me as I would much rather someone knock on the door and talk to me. Not to the point that I would come to your apartment and threaten you, but I'd definitely come say something. I wouldn't be loud anyways but w/e!

Just call the police every time he's playing too loud, too late.

    It'll sort itself out.

Don't get your hopes up on that. It all depends on department polilcy about releasing incident reports.

At my work, you need to show upto head quarters in person to receive a copy of a report.

Preemptive strike is the only solution. That or moving into an apartment complex that isn't run by spineless assholes that throw their residents under the bus.

This is actually a very upscale complex, one of the nicest in town. 5 min in any direction to a shopping center or mall, 20 from the beach. This dude is just a thug college student tho living there with two others. His GF and a friend.

Complex called me today, said they couldn't do anything until he physically harmed me, that's kinda what I'm trying to prevent.

Restraining order won't work, management said that isn't grounds to be moved, but if were passing each other down the stairs and i have a restraining order then I don't understand how it would work. Seems like I'd be calling the police about the order every day.

Wifes father is a lawyer, he's gonna see what can actually be done about being moved still. Seems shitty that I gotta have my face broken just to get moved lol

But i personally am not really afraid. The police are involved now and are aware of the threat so he won't do anything most likely. Just my wife is really shaken up still. Doing what I can to calm her nerves. I'll take suggestions on that topic too!

If you want to avoid physical contact I would avoid the gun thing. If the person is literally bat shit crazy this can blow up in your face really badly. Not to mention, it only weakens your case if the police take action.

Same difference, as long as you have proof that's what matters. File about 3-5 reports and then take them to the front office and demand they do something about it. If not, tell them that you want out of your lease for them not giving proper living conditions.

Wow, lots of horror stories about living in apartments. My apartment seems like gold now. When we first moved here we had a useless superintendent who didn't clean or fix anything, but he's been replaced since. We barely hear a peep from our neighbours. My husband is convinced that the building has super thick walls. I tell him that it's just that we're the loudest people and because a little old woman lives to one side and a single nerdy guy to the other. Of course, there have been the occasional incident in the building (on another floor) where the police have been called and there are so many old people here that they die occasionally so that's not pleasant. Oh, and there was a double shooting across the street on Saturday night. But other than that, it's a great place to live.

There is a noise ordinance in Madison, they will give you a couple warnings unless they hear it themselves. All depends on the evidence they have. I live in a house and have had the police here many times because of neighbors complaining about loud music but by the time they get here it is normally turned down. Sometimes listening to just one song really loud can really piss some people off. The thing that bothers me is that they can be playing their retarded music fairly loud in their backyard with kids screaming and yelling in their pool does not seem bothersome to others in their eyes. I guess it's all perspective...

Bass fucking carries and is fucking annoying as shit if you're not the one listening to the song.
