Actually strike that last post, it doesnt even matter. The point still stands, multi archived file distribution is a retarded scheme in this day and age. Nothing that's been said has given any advantage to this distribution method.

are games first released in newsgroups because of tradition or because they can get a sizable start time lead for whatever reason
tradition, privacy(sorta), and ease of distribution.
More like they're just the ones that get it first
Where's the piracy pyramid thing that starts at the ripper/scene then goes to news groups and eventually torrents and rapidshare
I wish every day was a propulsion gel
I use the shit for lube
I will play with you and pretend like I haven't played it yet and let you solve all the tough puzzles like I've done with a few of my friends so far
should have said that hours ago, I'm going to sleep soon so if you want you can revel in my genius skills tomorrow
I am going to be high on shrooms tomorrow but I'm down to give it a shot
This works, I played the entire coop with my friend Drew. The thing is because you're not authenticating to steam you dont get achievements so you dont unlock the next stages so you have to manually change the map. Kind of sucks but what can you do (besides pay for the game).
Also you have to be on a LAN together or set up some VLAN of some sort, we used Hamachi.
Uhhh also you may have to just keep hitting connect [ip] and map mp_coop_etc a few times to get it to sync up just right. I'd recommend telling the non-host to put in the IP then wait a second or two then put in the map command, that usually did it for us. Mine crashed a fair few times so we had to restart some levels over, mildly annoying.
Also if you make it to the end I'd like to know if you crash at a very specific point in the game. On the very very very last section of the very last level you have to open a vault and there's this long jump portion, there's a section to the right that you complete first to get the repulsion gel down and then a portion on the left you have to complete to get the propulsion gel down so you can long jump across and then you win. Where I crashed every single time was in the propulsion section on the left, after you go across and you make it up to where the turrets were that's where I crashed. If we had any object (like propulsion gel) up there it'd crash, if I stepped foot up there it crashed, if my teammate stepped up there it crashed. We used cheats like noclip to just zoom straight there and were like "Okay we're directly above the turrets and it's not crashing..." then turned off noclip landed and crashed. I'd just like to know if that happens for anyone else.
Also because you change the map manually you might end up just playing them out of order. We did. We didnt really have any problem with it though. We had both fully played through single player so there wasnt really anything for it to teach us through the progression of the levels. All that I remember for sure is that you should as a general rule start out with the maps that end in _intro and then also the _paint_ ones are the last set of levels.
Those coop levels were WAAAAAY better than the single player ones. They were actually really challenging at some times and I KNOW we beat some of them wrong but we did what we had to to get past. Like there was this one where I know we were supposed to put repulsion gel on two platforms and then jump across to this other side but we couldnt get the repulsion gel on the first platform. We ended up doing this weird jump and then air strafing thing around a corner to beat it.
so #'s I just dl'd hamachi and set up a network (home version). Do I use the IP looking number in the top left of the program as my IP for connecting with portal
Yes
The 5.x.x.x one
Both people need it and when you setup a network you should see both PCs in the network and they should both have green dots. You should be able to ping eachothers 5.x.x.x address and that verifies that you will be able to connect to eachother. If you cant you either have a firewall problem or the second most likely problem is the interface prioritiy. You can manually change Hamachi to the highest priority by (Windows 7) Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections (Not network and sharing) -> press ALT to bring up the menus go click on advanced -> advanced settings. There'll be a Connections window and it should have all of your interfaces including your logical interface from hamachi, you just select it and press the up button to move it to the top of the list then restart your computer.
