    A Question Regarding Labor Law

I work for my local newspaper and my job requires me to drive all around the 4 towns it is distributed in. I get paid mileage, as I use my own car, but it is not much. Last week, another guy who works at the same paper, but in a different deptartment told me that our employer underpays us in mileage (which is true).

However, he also said we get paid under the legal minimum for mileage. So my question, to anyone who might know the answer, or mgiht be able to point me in the right direction is:

Is there a legel minimum wage for mileage, for jobs that get paid in mileage, either federal or state?

My company pays the standard IRS declared rate, which changes yearly.

    http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/...232017,00.html

51 cents per mile for business miles driven
19 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes
14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations
But I do not know if it is a law that companies must offer this.

    Edit:

This says that they are not required to obey the standard rate.

There is no Federal Law that requires them to pay you any mileage at all. They just have to provide "reasonable compensation" for you using your own personal property for work. This can be very loosely translated by many employers to mean that they can just give you a $.10/hr raise and call it "reasonable". However, there are varying laws by state and you should check your state's employment department as they will have any pertinent info on it.

This. Most businesses around my area use $0.50 per mile. Although, I believe food delievery places (pizza, subs, etc) are typically under that.

You can write off the difference up to the federal standard.
I do this almost every year.

As of April 1st, we just got a 3cent raise in mileage to 39cents. My mother is a teacher and goes from school to school in her town, and gets like 55cents, so i was very curious
