Officials: Ore. woman's baby cut out of her womb

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) — A once-pregnant 21-year-old newcomer to Oregon who was found dead in a crawl space of a home had been cut open and her baby taken from her womb, investigators said Monday.

It couldn't be determined if the infant son of Heather Snively died before or after he was removed, the Washington County sheriff's department said in a statement.

A 27-year-old woman, Korena Roberts, has been charged with murder in Snively's death. She appeared in court Monday but did not enter a plea.

A 911 call on Friday brought emergency workers to Roberts' house in the Portland suburb of Beaverton. Workers found blood on the floor and Roberts' boyfriend trying to revive the infant.

Investigators said Roberts claimed the baby was hers. At the emergency room, doctors, who were unable to revive the baby, determined that Roberts had not given birth.

Police said they returned to Roberts' home and found the hidden body. Roberts' boyfriend is cooperating and doesn't face charges, the sheriff's office said.

A medical examiner said Monday that Snively died of blunt and sharp force injuries.

"At this time, it has not been determined if she died because of head wounds she received or as a result of cutting injuries she received to her abdomen," the sheriff's office said.

A grand jury will hear the case, the prosecutor said, and Roberts might also face charges in the infant's death — if lab tests determine he ever took a breath.

"The issue is was the child alive at all at any point in time," said Washington Count District Attorney Bob Herman. "This is certainly unusual for its circumstances and nature."

Investigators said Monday that Roberts, who has two children younger than 10, had been telling friends and relatives for months that she was pregnant, and told many people she would have twins.

Snively had recently moved to Oregon from Maryland because her boyfriend and father of the child had found a better job.

Snively's mother, Heidi Kidd of St. Albans, W.Va., said Snively met Roberts a few weeks ago through Craigslist, the online classified service. Police said Monday they are still trying to confirm that.

Roberts told Snively she was pregnant and wanted baby clothes, Kidd said. They befriended one another and kept talking online.

Kidd told The Associated Press on Sunday that her first grandson was to be named John Steven.

"I'm still in shock; it hasn't hit me," she said. "I mean, that initial phone call; I just couldn't believe it. I just could not believe I was talking about my own child."

Neighbors on Monday said Roberts bought a stroller at a garage sale and set up a crib on the front lawn of her rental home. They said Snively was seen at Roberts' house more than once.

On Monday outside the house, there was a blue plastic play pool, a broken yellow play tractor, offerings of flowers and a handwritten note, saying, "May God be with you."
    Hmm... just found another...

Woman who 'stole baby alive from mother's womb' feared her husband would leave after she lied about her pregnancy

    By Daily Mail Reporter
Last updated at 5:36 PM on 02nd July 2008

A woman accused of a cutting an unborn baby from the womb of a mother she kidnapped had told her husband she was pregnant.

Investigators discovered Sisouvanh Synhavong, 23, had claimed she was expecting her first child.

They believe she feared her husband would leave her once he discovered she had lied about her pregnancy.

Synhavong befriended her victim, 27-year-old Araceli Gomez, by offering to supply her with baby clothes after striking up a conversation with her on a bus.

She later kidnapped the mum of two and drove her to a secluded park where she stabbed her multiple times in the chest.

Laos-born Synhavong used a craft knife to cut the baby from her womb. Doctors say he is in a critical condition but is expected to survive.

Synvahong was still clutching the baby's umbilical cord when she was taken to hospital claiming the baby was hers. She had called emergency services pretending she had given birth on the back seat of her car.

Medical tests showed she had not had a baby and police found the mutilated body of her victim.

Synvahong told friends in the town of Kennewick, Washington state, that she was pregnant.

She married 35-year-old fisherman Keun Synvahong a month ago. He was due to return to Alaska where he spends up to eight months of the year.

One friend said: "Sisouvanh was worried that her husband would leave her once he found out she wasn't pregnant.

"One of the reason they got married was because she told him she was expecting."

The victim's fiancee, Juan Felipe, spent several hours by his newborn son's bedside.

He also visited his fiancée at the mortuary as friends say he is trying to make sense of the killing.

His fiancée's two other children, aged ten and two, are being cared for by friends.

Synhavong has been charged with first-degree murder and faces the death penalty if convicted.
    And another...

Woman kills young mother, cuts her baby out of the womb, and then takes the baby home to her husband and kids as her own newborn. WTF?

If you have not read about this horriffic case yet, Lisa M. Montgomery of Melvern Kansas had a baby girl fourteen years ago and then had her tubes tied. Since that time, she frequently claimed that she was pregnant to her ex-husband, current husband, and fellow dog-show attendees. Even more recently, she claimed on a rat-terrier computer forum that she was carrying twins and that she lost one of the twins in the early stage of the pregnancy. But it was all a lie. “None of the rat-terrier people believed she was pregnant,” terrier breeder Nanci Strudl told the Kansas City Star. “She never gained an ounce.”

Her ex-husband was filing to take custody of their children, and Lisa was desperate to have another child with her second husband. Meanwhile, she had been attending various dog shows, where at one point, she had her photo taken with a young expectant mother-to-be named Bobbie Jo Stinnett, Lisa came up with a fake name (Darlene Fischer), contacted young Ms. Stinnett on the internet and claimed that she wanted to come over to look at Ms. Stinnett’s rat terriers in order to purchase one of the pups. That morning, Lisa Montgomery went to the Wal-mart to pick out baby clothing. One lady thinks that it may have been Lisa who approached her in the Wal-mart that morning, offering to hold her baby while she shopped. Her motherly instincts told her this was not a good idea so she didn’t allow the stranger to hold her baby. In any case, Wal-mart officials did see Lisa on the security tapes that morning buying clothing. Then she went to the young mother-to-be’s house. Bobbie Jo Stinnett had been on the phone with her mother and told her mother that she had to go meet a new customer who was interested in pups. When she opened the door, Lisa Montgomery strangled her, cut the fetus out of her womb while she was still alive, cut the umbilical cord on the child, cleaned and dressed the baby, and then called her husband to tell him that she had delivered the baby while she was out shopping. Lisa Montgomery’s husband and kids met her near Topeka, Kansas the next day and the “new family” went home. Bobbie Jo Stinnett’s mother found Bobbie Joe laying in a pool of blood, called the ambulance, and unfortunately Bobbie Jo died on the way to the hospital in the care of the paramedics. She was 23.

When I read stories like this, I do my best to try to understand what would cause somebody to commit such an act. Given that cases such as this occur with some regularity, the first lesson I take away is that once again, this is a reminder that we are biochemical animals with intense biological imperative drives. We are shocked because the acts seem to be the act of unreasonable people. And that’s the point. Reason would not enter into it, given that it is a higher level brain function, separated from the lower instinctive drives to mate, run, kill, eat, and nurture. I will never know what Lisa Montgomery’s issues were. But if I had to guess, there might be shame at having lost a child, fear of an angry husband if she told him she lost it, and the innate desire to mother that had been cut short and that needed an outlet.

It sounds like she had been a pathological liar about being pregnant and had finally worked up the courage to steal somebody else’s baby and claim it as her own. So the lower instinctive drive activated the higher-level social skills, got her near a potential target, and then she killed another woman and took that child as her own. This is something that sometimes happens in the non-human animal kingdom as well. We are not as far away from it as we would like to think. Sure, we are separated by ethics and morals. But some people don’t have those. My friend and mentor Peter Koestenbaum recently wrote an appropriate article in his weekly leadership newsletter:

    CHOOSING ETHICS

Being ethical is always a decision. Animals may have feelings, capable of bonding and attachment, but we don’t say they are ethical. Being ethical is typically human. And humans who tamper with their ethics endanger the integrity of their very humanity. The difference lies in the zone of freedom. For we choose our behavior in accordance with the criteria of what is ethical and what is not. A person may commit a heinous crime, but if that person lacks judgment, cannot reflect, cannot think, that person is given treatment instead of punishment.

Human freedom is rooted in the human fact of free will. And free will is scary. Why? Because we can choose anything we want. In the purity of our philosophical truth, the truth about freedom is that, like it or not, we are at least potentially and theoretically free to choose whether we are to attach ourselves to something, like our child, or whether we want to distance ourselves from, and do not care what happens to, people at the other end of the world. We can also choose the reverse….

[From The Philosophic Consultant, 2002, Koestenbaum]

What I want to know is, exactly how clueless is her husband? Her previous husband knew that she had her tubes tied. You would think that her current husband would know that. You would also think that he would notice if she had added 20-30 pounds of fat and was cycling through the standard pregnancy biochemical cycles for eight months. She managed to cover it up long enough to find the young mother and take her child. That alone seems bizarre and hard to believe, but perhaps she wrapped herself up with blankets around her waist to cover up the obvious or perhaps she was bearing a lot of extra weight so it wasn’t noticeable. But if the rat-terrier people didn’t believe her, then why did her husband? Did they never have sex? More likely, he knew she wasn’t pregnant but didn’t want to know where the baby came from. That is only my speculation though.

The child was taken from its womb at eight months. Who knows when it was actually scheduled to arrive, but it was brought into the world sooner and much more abruptly than anticipated, and by all accounts she is doing fine. That is the resiliency of life and I think it is quite awesome. It makes me think of my favourite line from Jurassic Park: “Life always finds a way.”

I feel horrible for Zeb Stinnett, husband of the dead young mother-to-be, who will now have to live with that death and will have to raise his child by himself all because some crazed biologicially driven woman from another state murdered his wife and stole his child. And for Mr. Montgomery and his kids who will have to sit through a lengthy trial while their wife and mother is charged with kidnapping and murder. The kids are in school so I can’t imagine how that is going to affect them. Fortunately, they have been handed over to Montgomery’s ex-husband, the kids’ biological father. Not that that will make it any easier for them.

Bobbie Jo, rest in peace. And Baby Stinnett, welcome to the world. Hopefully that will be the worst thing you will ever experience while you’re here.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

can't believe I remember this movie but totally reminds me of this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empty_Cradle

Jane Morgan (Lori Loughlin) is the mother of two children, Sally (Camilla Belle) and Sam (Zachary Browne), and pregnant of a third. She has been separated from her husband Bob (David Lansbury) for a while, who is desperate to win back his wife's affection. After being five days overdue, Jane goes into labor. Everything is going well, until she is suddenly sedated by a nurse, Rita Donahue (Kate Jackson). Hours later, she regains consciousness, and the doctor informs her she went into labor prematurely and had a stillborn. Noticing the amount of drugs that was in her body after the labor, he suspects that she is abusing medicine pills, which he thinks caused the premature birth.

Little does Jane know that Rita - with the help of her teenage son Patrick (Jonah Blechman) - stole her baby daughter, and switched records on a stillborn and healthy child to make it appear as if Jane's baby was a stillborn. Rita faked a pregnancy for months to keep her drifting lover Frank (Don Yesso) from leaving her. When Frank, who is married to another woman - shows his disappointment that 'their' child is not a boy, Rita responds in anger, and immediately sets out to somehow get a baby boy as well. Sometime later, she announces that she is pregnant again, and poses under the assumed name Elaine Crisp to take care of a pregnant woman who will deliver a boy. When Rita finds out that the woman knows about her true identity, she instead gives labor of a 30-year-old woman named Theresa Richland (Elizabeth Daily) in her home, cuts her throat, and steals her baby.

Meanwhile, Jane becomes convinced that she did not suffer a miscarriage, but instead of receiving support, her relatives and best friend Sharon (Michelle Joyner) believe that she is addicted to drugs and suffering from a depression, and suggest her to visit a psychiatrist. Even though she is estranging herself from everyone she knows, Jane continues to find out the truth and slowly recollects all the memories of her labor. In the hospital, she runs into Nurse Ramsey (Karmin Murcelo), who helped her with her labor before Rita stepped in. Ramsey admits that she remembers that her baby was alive and healthy when she last check up on her, but she is too afraid to support her theories. Therefore, Jane hires attorney Gail Huddle (Penny Johnson) to sue the hospital, only to find out her case is hopeless since her records have gone missing (due to Rita).

Back in the hospital, Detective Knoll (Eriq La Salle) suspect Rita as Theresa's killer, because Theresa's boyfriend Tom Burke (Blake Gibbons) identified her as her midwife. After giving him a false alibi, she instructs Patrick over the phone to give Knoll the same story if he is questioned. Nevertheless, Knoll instructs an examination, during which her doctor concludes that she has had a hysterectomy over ten years ago and cannot give birth to children. Afterwards, Rita admits to the murder of Theresa and having stolen two babies, but refuses to tell who the first baby's mother is. Nonetheless, Knoll locates Jane, and happily reunites her with her daughter.

Violence is never original. It comes from TV, video games, movies, and puppet shows. That's why they never had violence way back in the stone age.

lol... i could never get past the level where you have to explain why you have a uterus attached to your already-born baby, and yet the medical tests show you have a uterus still in your body.
