It took a while for me to realize it (and be told, lol), but the best way to hunt down Waterleaf and Fireblossom seeds is to carry around buckets of water/lava because you will almost never find them naturally submerged and ready to be harvested. You gotta' make it happen.

Deserts will have plenty of dormant Waterleaf growing in the sand, and the Underworld will have the occasional dormant Fireblossom growing in the ash. Dumping some water on some Waterleaf to get it to bloom isn't difficult at all, but getting set up to carefully pour some lava on a little Fireblossom with Hellbats, Lava Slimes, Fire Imps, Bone Serpents, and Demons swarming around you can be a giant pain in the ass... especially when the ash collapses and breaks the flower prematurely. I hate that shit.

Anyone play around with the Sandgun yet? I think I'm at like 7/10 Antlion Mandibles now. I'm getting real tired of hunting Antlions, even with Battle Potions. I only end up killing maybe 10~15 in a game-day... and my drop rate is probably something like 10%.

I want to go down and get me my only missing spell, Demon Scythe, but I'm kinda nervous about drinking a Battle Potion down there with the inclusion of Lava Slimes. Shit gets out of control unless you're also drinking a bunch of Obsidian Skin Potions.

In the recent update (if you were used to the way plants where dealt with before) a change was made:

Plants growing out of a clay pot can no longer be cut with a weapon. The new alchemy plants can be grown in these pots.
Gems, ore, and gold chests now have a sparkle effect
    .

But as mentioned by others, simply use your pickaxe on the plant you want to harvest, placing your cursor on that plant just above the pot itself.

I have just been creating 'perforated' walkways down there. Block - space - block. It is annoying as shit but once you have one that is long enough it makes farming the mobs more bearable. Dealing with the slimes (since they seem to spawn the most, with bats in 2nd place) becomes much easier when the lava just harmlessly drops down instantly.

I'll probably end up doing that (I haven't even touched the Underworld in my current world), but I just wish there was a less ridiculous way to deal with Lava Slime loads. Haha, not to mention if you kill enough of them, you're going to fill the pit below the bridge. :3 I just wish they either toned down their spawn rate significantly or made it more of a 25~50% chance that they would dump lava on death.

You guys have any advice on finding a decent powered weapon for the underworld, my gold sword and bow just aren't cutting it and mobs down there are hitting me for like 40 or 50 or so, with my measly 200ish health i die pretty quick.

Hell I tried to venture into the desert but those things just swarmed me and I couldn't even deal with the terrain I was killing them slower than they would spawn.

When it comes to weapons that you don't have to delve into the pits of Hell or the depths of a Dungeon to find...

Ball 'O Hurt or Vilethorn from killing Shadow Orbs. They aren't the hardest-hitting, but they can hit multiple times in one 'swing.'

In the process of doing that, you'll find yourself ambushed by Eater of Worlds, who drops Demonite Ore and Shadow Scales, and you'll cause some Meteors to fall from the sky. These events, if you can survive them, will naturally move you on to those materials and on to crafting things like Phaseblades, Shadowscale/Meteor armors, Demonite tools, which will allow you to survive in the Underworld long enough to harvest up some Hellstone (before you get killed) and get on to the best tools/weapons.

If you know where your Jungle is, you may want to carefully go deeper into that, cutting as many Jungle Roses as you can find as well as trying to kill about 20 Hornets for their stingers so you can make a Blade of Grass. Which is decently strong and has massive reach.

Go hunt an Eater of Worlds (or two or three) and get yourself some Demonite for weapons/armor and that will make your life a lot easier.

Agreed Mioko. The random Slime lava dump would be a huge improvement/fix. I spent a good deal of time on my 'bridge' when I was hunting for chests for the Dark Lance and never noticed the lava getting much higher at all really from the Slime Death Fest '11.

My weapon progression was pretty much Wooden Sword > Silver Sword > Gold Sword. I took the gold sword to the Jungle and ended up with enough Roses/Thorns to make the Thorn Chakrum which I used to kill all kinds of things. It was my main weapon. I used that to kill plenty of Bone Serpents, Imps, etc. I killed Eye of Cthulhu with that as well. Made a Phaseblade which was ok... but only ok. One of the Bone Serpents I killed with my Chakrum gave me a Sunfury which I used to lay waste to Eater of Worlds and EoC a few more times, and then Skeletron until I got my Muramasa!

I just got a demon scythe from my porous hellstone bridge, but I still haven't found a plumber's hat.

God yea, Lava Slimes are really the worst. I saw someone suggest that they should explode and spray lava in their immediate vicinity, but that lava should just disappear when it hits the ground.

I still think the spawn rate in the underworld is too high. There are way too many bats harassing you now, it makes babyproofing really annoying, even with Thorns/Ironskin/Regen potions. Of course half of my lava brides in my main world are made of ash, so they fucking collapse whenever I hit a fireblossom (which are impossible to see), so I've given up on fixing them with stone/dirt until they do something about the balance down there.

I have a way tougher time with demons than lava slime.

Any one have any tips on just starting out? I feel so helpless compared to Minecraft. I made a ghetto home but eh. And I found a cave but I'm dying to every little thing I see...

I'd stay close to the surface, look for shallow depth chests to plunder. Upgrade your pickaxe ASAP and it will make a lot of your upgrades easier. Find/make a chest to store your cash in, deposit it often.

generally speaking, it makes it easier to use your ores like this:
Copper: Armor, Hammer if you want
Iron: Save for chests at first
    Silver: Armor
Gold: Weapon and Pickaxe first, then armor

But yeah, start with trees and make a crafting table and a wooden sword, then go explore some surface caves for treasure and ore and drops. If you make a hammer you can pick up empty treasure chests you find and use them to hold stuff. Build rooms/houses (a house has a back wall that's not dirt, a table/chair, and a light source, and a door) and NPCs will start moving in. After that, most people go Meteor -> Underground Jungle -> Dungeon -> Underworld.

I went noob crap -> demonite -> dungeon -> underworld -> jungle. All I bothered with meteors for was to make a hamaxe. That's not what most people do but I didn't really concern myself with how other people were playing the game so I didn't hear things like "mine straight down and gather as much obsidian and hellstone as you can" and so on. The game isn't hard at all, there's no need to facefuck the gear progression.

You have five basic types of weapons.

Swords: Material swords (copper iron silver gold meteorite demonite jungle hellstone), Masamune, Starfury (also magical). Your bread and butter monster slayer, most things you fight will be best fought with a sword, simply because of its swing radius. Having the best sword you can make or find is a good first priority (Masamune is considered the "best" though the Blade of Grass, Fiery Greatsword, and especially Night's Edge have very high damage per swing).

Flails: Harpoon (kind of), Ball o' Hurt, Blue Moon, Sunfury. Harpoon is kind of a gimmick weapon, but the other flails are all solid choices. Getting a Ball o' Hurt from a shadow orb can make the first Eater of Worlds fight MUCH easier, since flails can hit multiple pieces of multisegment bosses. Flails are very powerful, but take time and practice to get good at aiming and predicting. Generally a good boss weapon, though not as effective on others as on EoW.

Polearm: Spear, Trident, Dark Lance. Spear is a decent early weapon. Somewhat specialized; if you're going to use it, keep in practice with it. Because it hits multiple times directly forward instead of once in an arc, you have to fight very differently from doing so with a sword. Dark Lance is an amazing weapon for stationary targets, bosses, and Bone Serpents in the Underworld.

Missile: Bows and Guns. Bows arc, guns shoot forward, boomerangs return. Some bullets bounce or hit multiple targets. I've never spent much time with bows, so I don't know if the higher-tier ones are worthwhile, but guns can be pretty good. My personal preference is for boomerangs; you can get a wooden one very early with surface chests, and enchanted boomerangs can be pretty common in mid-underground chests. The chakram can be created from jungle ingredients, and is my personal preference because it bounces, but the flaming boomerang is more powerful (since it uses hellstone). For guns, I don't find any of them worth it except the handgun (and its hellstone upgrade, phoenix blaster), and the star cannon (which you'll want to gather lots of shooting stars for; don't bother til your mana is maxed!). The higher rate of fire on the minishark just means more wasted ammo.

Magic: Magic spell damage is generally underpowered, but it CAN make a fun alternative. Magic Missile (and its upgrade, flame lash) is actually a good utility spell. If you cast it and hold the projectile in the air, it can make a mobile light source, and you can use it to explore pits a little (it cuts vines and webs and breaks pots without wasting the spell charge). Water Bolt makes for an interesting, if slow, way to find Floating Islands. Water Bolt projectiles bounce multiple times, so if you shoot one straight up, it will hit any floating structures and bounce back to you. Vilethorn penetrates walls and hits multiple times; I consider it a required basic tool to carry around. Overall, magic damage is underpowered; you can improve the utility of magic by using meteorite or jungle armor (full set reduces spell costs) and starpower bands for mana regen, and a wizard's hat for more power, but you'll always be lacking either in MP or damage power.

Short version: get the best sword you can get until masamune, get the best flail you can for special situations, get a vilethorn, everything else is gravy.

Started a hardcore character. It's no joke. I like that tombstones mark where, and how, you die.

I love my flails. Especially the Sunfury. Though the Dark Lance is definitely better for bone serpents.

I still carry a sword, but I rarely ever use it. I just use a sunfury and a dark lance now. And vilethorn! Great for farming harpies for feathers from the safety of my sky castle.

I use my Muramasa, Sunfury and Dark Lance. I have like 4 lightsabers sitting around too.

I actually like using my Molten Hamaxe as a weapon too, since the knockback it is pretty good. I use it to kill sharks, it keeps them far enough away that they pretty much never hit you.

I preferred the Sunfury over everything until I found myself often fighting on wooden bridges. It's really annoying to have to wait for the flail to max out or hit the ground below before it retracts. Since most of my serious fighting was going on in the Underworld, which was covered with wooden bridges, Masamune was my weapon of choice.
