Picked this up with some friends when it was on sale, does the person who starts the server always have to be on for the other people to play on it?

Yeah, they can make and play their own single player world if they like. The cool thing is that you can bring your character and items from any world into any world. Also, there is an item the merchant sells for one gold called the piggy bank, you can put stuff into it, and then pick it back up, also - all piggy banks(of a particular players) are linked together. So you can put items in a piggy bank on one world, and plop down another on someone elses multiplayer world, and whatever you put in one will transfer to the other.
The only way you could do what you're suggesting is to copy your world file and send it to your friends, in which case one of them could start a multiplayer world using that file for the others to play on - the only problem with that is they will need to send you back the updated file when they're done, if you want to have cumulative progress.
My friends and I just have one of us host a dedicated server pretty much 24/7.
I'm bored, so I finally took a pic of my base that I've been working on:
Spoiler: show
There's also a few other outbuildings, like an alternate spawn point near the dungeon entrance and a small shack located above a shaft to the nearest demon altar. There's also a mushroom farm, a vile mushroom farm, and a set of piranha spawn tanks but I didn't feel like posting all of them. My next project will probably be a coral farm floating above the ocean in the west, with a glass observation room submerged in the water beneath it. Or maybe an automatic shark farm like they have on the forums, idk yet.
omg... Tiy just posted this pic, it WILL NOT be in the next update but it's coming in the future
Are those Mannequins? holy shitttttt i want all that stuff lolOriginally Posted by Tiyuri
You, sir, have a problem, lol. But seriously, those are amazing creations, I wish I was 10% as creative as you are.
A couple questions you could probably answer .... how exactly do you dupe lava/water? I do not really feel like falling down my Hellevator 50 times to complete my garden.
Wow that's tight Atreides
did anyone see biome castle on terraria's front page - my favorite part of that was the desert biome that looks like it broke from the chain and shattered on the ground - the guy had some really cool ideas there.
Do you see those areas with lava/water in my screenshots? that's how you dupe lava/water in Terraria, you basically pour a bucket over a block jutting up, then the liquid inside splits between the two sides (in my screenshots, half goes into a little 1-block deep indentation, and the other half goes into the larger area. You can then use the empty bucket to pick up the liquid that's in the little indentation. It's technically half of a block, but once you pick it up the game counts it as a full bucket. You can then repeat the process, you can click really fast.
For filling up garden areas, you can just make that shape over the flower pots with dirt or whatever. I use bricks, because I feel like I mess up clicks less than with dirt lol. It's slow since it's half a bucket at a time, but it's faster than going all the way to hell and back. Some people think you can add more splits below the original one to make it faster, although I'm still not entirely convinced that actually works (although I do it anyway).
Yeah I didn't know that, can't tell you how many trips i made to the lake to fill up my waterleaf garden, still not as bad as tripping to hell and back but still. Thanks!
holy shit @ Atreides
for some reason I can't see the pics of what he posted, my computer won't display them. Anyone have any ideas why?
any chance your browser/addons are blocking tinypic.com?
Only Add-On I have for Firefox is AddBlock, and tinypic.com isn't on the list of filters.
I disabled the Add-On, still can't see it.
Boomp. Here's the new patch list for whenever the update is scheduled.
The release date of patch 1.0.6 is currently unscheduled. The version was originally going to be called 1.1 as it was such a game changing update, but the idea was dismissed as the developers wanted 1.1 to be a more major game content update, similar to an MMO expansion.[1]

Agree. /bored.
Oh yeah, that list is simply a (verified-accurate) compilation of everything that has been said/leaked/disclosed by developers so far.
Does it help to start on a larger map for a new character? I went small, and so far I'm having a real rough time trying to get anything done. If I go right of my house, I encounter a very small desert, and then this dungeon-looking area where a bunch of flying monster things rape me. If I go left for a bit, I end up hitting a biome with monsters that take 15+ strikes to hit that also rape me on contact.
Mostly just been digging down further and further into the caves near my house. Finally got enough iron ore to replace all my wooden shit with it, but I'm still naked as far as armor goes.
