It might not be deep enough. It probably has to be way underground, where they're normally found.

"Mushroom Grass Seeds have a chance to drop from harvesting Glowing Mushrooms. They must be planted in mud in the second strata layer underground in order to grow Glowing Mushrooms. Once the seeds have been planted in a suitable location, the blue texture from the seeds will spread to cover over time."
From one of the wikis.
Fuuuuuuuuuuu, I thought I read somewhere else that the strata didn't matter as long as it was under ground level and void of any artificial light. I guess otherwise, it's just glowing blue mud that does nothing else.
P.S. be careful when moving your stars around your inventories during the day. I was just moving a stack of 10 from a chest to my inventory to craft, and I accidentally clicked in the little gap between inventory boxes and I dropped them all... during daylight so they vanished.
I've been in about 4 dungeons sofar and I've still not found rocket boots. -_-
mots is a derp
I noticed you can get infinite money since mining sand blocks actually yields more blocks than are physically there...
sand > glass > bottles > sell
It takes a lot of clicking, unless there's a faster way to craft multiple items at once?
Haha, I found that out too. A cave I was exploring had a wall of the stuff I just plowed through. Something like 10 stacks of sand in all. I think a 98 stack of bottle sells for 40~ silver.
Anyways, my experience thus far for anyone who's interesting in it:
I got the game yesterday morning, and I'm guessing I'm 6~8 hours into it. I'm exploring a cave and I haven't gotten farther than Skeletons/Black slimes. Died once trying to get a heart crystal, which was underwater and in the dark. I didn't get to hammer it before a mother slime pounced me and killed me. Now that I have my MH, I need to get my ass back down there.
A meteor crashed on the 2nd game day, but I didn't know where or what it meant. I found it about 10 minutes away from my spawn and began mining it. I set up a mini-camp outside the music and set my spawn there. I would then run in, mine it, or lay platform and then die. After an hour I realized I could just my 2 dynamite to mine the thing, which took out the second half in seconds. I got a Phaseblade and a body armor out of it, and I also learned the benefits of blast mining.
Loot thus far:
Phaseblade, Meteor Mail, silver legs, mining helmet, enchanted boomerang, cloud in a bottle, hermes boots, magic mirror.
Rocket boots from from Goblin Sorcerers and are found randomly in chests? Have been itching to find a floating island.
P.S. I'm lonely. Any servers up?
One of the tricks of finding floating islands without Rocket Boots is to craft a Depth Meter, stack blocks to get to about the height that the islands are found (70~120 above for small worlds, 850~900 above for large worlds), and then move horizontally until you hit one. I was super lucky and went straight up into the bottom of one and got myself a Lucky Horseshoe. Also, I probably would not attempt this without either a Cloud in a Bottle or Lucky Horseshoe for when you fall/jump off.
Now I'm rocking:
Gold Tools (mining Hellstone is proving to be a pain in my ass)
Silver Armor
Flamerang (fucking sweet)
Magic Mirror (amazing for reckless exploring and escaping bad situations)
Lucky Horseshoe
Band of Regeneration
Cloud in a Bottle
Flippers (yay for no more drowning)
I only just killed my first boss (Eye of Cthulu) which was a bit of a challenge for my shit armor and only my precious little Flamerang. I'm not looking forward to attempting Eater of Worlds with just a Gold Broadsword...
i got full meteor armor a few minutes ago. it's pretty awesome since it regens your mana and makes you use 25% less mana ontop of that. i use vialthorn mainly http://terraria.wikia.com/wiki/Vilethorn and my ball'o'hurt.
i have 300 hp and there's 0 chance of me soloing skeletron even though i can fight eye of cuthulu without taking damage :[
I gotta' love how the first time a meteor spawned for me, it was on the opposite side of the entire fucking (large) world from my spawn... and when I go to start mining it Blood Moon!
Thennnn, Eater of Worlds spawned on me when I destroyed an orb, resulting in me being stuck at the bottom of a huge chasm getting raped until I died.
I love this thing solely because you can just hold down attack and spam slashes. The armor gives +15% attack speed, I have one accessory from the jungle that gives +10% but apparently they stack so I'm still looking for more.

Anyway, you can solo Skeletron. If you're having difficulty just run into the dungeon at night without talking to the Old Man and loot chests while spamming pots. As long as you don't go in during the day the damage from the skullrape is manageable as long as you have pots. If you go in during the day he does 9999 damage. I did this and got a Blue Moon from a chest, and that was way overkill.
Flamearang is the best weapon to fight him with imo. Focus one hand, then the other, then the skull is easier than clthulu eye.
As for rocket boots, it's the only item I don't have. I even found a whoopie cushion lol
the only bad thing about the floating islands method is that if you put lots of walkways spanning most of your world, falling stars wont fall to earth (although it may be easier to just run along the walkway if you're farming them) in those spots. Also, if a meteor falls and hits a walkway you get significantly less ore than you would if it impacted the ground.

fuck yeah!
does dynamite permanently destroy some of the bricks closest to it in the explosion, the way tnt/creepers do in minecraft, or does it just essentially "mine" all the bricks? I really want to get rid of this meteor as the fucking stupid meteor heads make it a bitch to harvest, but I don't wanna lose too much meteor ore in the process.
afaik it just mines them all. nbd if you blow some up anyway, there's like 300+ ore per meteorite.
Honestly meteor shit is pretty skippable. All the good stuff made with it in the beta got changed to Hellstone bars and you can get Cobalt armor in the jungle if you need mana that bad
Yeah, the only reason you should be using meteorite armor is if you are having issues collecting Cobalt Armor. I am actually having that issue now but I've got 2/3 pieces sofar. I'm really not worried about finding the last piece of cobalt until I get my hands on Jet boots though.
