    The game, set 17 years after Soulcalibur IV, features guest characters, Project Soul producer Hisaharu Tago told Christian Donlan for Eurogamer.

    The main character is Patroklos, son of Sophitia. Patroklos is "inspired" by the gameplay of Sophitia, but is "sharper" and "more agile". He has new moves, but they're all inspired by Sophitia's.

    V takes the Siegried ending of IV and builds upon it. Seigfried, now 39 years old, no longer wields the Soul Calibur sword.

    V is described as a "generational shift", complete with new characters, but SCIV characters will return. "SC 1-4 was a continuous story," Tago said. "We want to make a generational shift with a new story this time."

    The Soulcalibur series is famous for the inclusion of characters from other universes, such as Link from The Legend of Zelda and Yoda from Star Wars. Will other non-Soulcalibur characters feature?

    "Difficult question," Tago said. "We will have guest characters as we did with Star Wars. Please stay tuned for more information on that."

    V marks a shift from two-handed swords to short swords, Tago announced. The story includes "the enigma as to why the swords have become short swords".

    The game's new fighting style is described as "lighter, sharper, and more elegant". The online mode has been improved with new features. "Gameplay in IV could be a little heavy, particularly when you were online – we wanted gameplay that was more fast and reactive," Tago said.

    On the shift in gameplay: "Maybe the hardcore fans will be afraid that we lose the core of the gameplay, but that's not the case. And for new players it's nice to have gameplay that is more continuous – you don't need to wait as much between moves.

    "There is quite some change in the gameplay from SCIV. The pace of the game has been improved, and the combos will be easier to perform, and the moves will be easier to pull out."

    Elsewhere, Tago confirmed the create a character feature from previous games in the series returns, but refused to divulge details.

    Sweet. SC4 has really been my fighter of choice since I played the first one on the Dreamcast. I never did get into the whole 2d fighters thing.

    Also wondering how Ivy's costume can keep getting skimpier without her being naked this time.

    Sophitia's motherly 'figure' hopefully looks better. I loved SC4, but hated how frustrated the AI could be.

    awesome, hopefully the character editor will have at least as many options this time around, had a ton of fun with that in sc4

    Sounds like good news, hoping there are more chraacters than the 2-4 they add each game(with "randoms")

    Also would like to see more than just Cervantes online too.

    I just want Nightmare and Siegfried to be the same people again cause I didn't like how they divided Nightmare's move pool between the 2 characters!

    I'd rather they stay separate. I love the current Nightmare and sometimes I enjoy playing Siegfried too, definitely wouldn't want them mixing together again. And luckily based on the way the story has been going I doubt they will be.

    As always, Odashima also posted a few other bits and pieces of information about the game, this time about controls. “This time we plan on reducing commands like A+K so moves are easier to pull off on pad,” Odashima tweeted. “Difficult commands only limits the moves players can use but changing them suddenly may make things feel strange. The balance is hard.”

    Odashima himself prefers to play Soulcalibur with an arcade stick, but added that there just isn’t a stick that’s for him. “I prefer stick but there’s no stick in the world that I like so I don’t own a ‘my stick’,” he revealed. “At work I use pad most of the time.”

    Maybe their online won't suck so hard too and maybe they can take off the stupid stats from CAC armor so you don't end up looking like a clown.

    I liked stats on items. Not like you couldn't just play the mode where stats had no function anyway...

    Tbh I played one match with this dude using Cervantes, got raped and never wanted to play again aside from the time I played with my friend.

    Can't wait. SC4 gameplay was awesome and the character models were gorgeous, still the best to this date in any fighting game. Just hope the netcode doesn't suck tremendous ass this time where it ultimately boils down Cervantes gun spam or Taki's three kick jump combo.

    Soul Edge for PS1 is still one of my favorites in the series. Most people don't remember it though.

    SC2 was probably my favorite in arcades. Nightmare was boss as hell back then. Splitting him into two characters was one of the worst things they did. It pains me to see some of Nightmare's combos butchered. SC3 was fun, but definitely not the best. Had the most fun playing with friends in that one. SCIV I played for ages. The finishing moves weren't really needed, but some of them looked nice at the time. The create a character was fun as fuck too. I will be looking forward to a SC5. Hopefully they add something to the gameplay. Take out those finishers and add in something else.

    Yeah those finishers were retarded but luckily they were pretty hard to pull off. Let alone doing doing it online.

    Only thing I'm hoping for is a more robust (hurr bust) single player. I loved SC2s single player options, but 4 was horrible. I didn't play 3 so I can't really comment there. I do enjoy it multiplayer every now and then, but I can't really get in to it like I can other games whereas I really enjoy just dicking around in single player and create a character.

    I'm a bit apprehensive about this. Soul Calibur is by far my favorite fighting series, but you never know what you're going to get from game to game. 2 had the best gameplay / character balance but had sepia-toned publicity stills for endings, 3 had cheating computer AI but a great story mode and endings, and 4 sort of went off the deep end with regards to ludicrous story developments and character derailment along with the worst single-player mode to date, but was oh so pretty. I'm not a fan of most guest fighters either (i.e. Spawn and Yoda), although 4's cloned ones were alright I suppose.
