    Couple more tidbits

Following Soulcalibur IV and Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny, Odashima appears concerned regarding the series increasingly risqué nature. Over the weekend, he told one of his followers that he wasn’t sure about including skimpy and fetish outfits in Soulcalibur V. To another, he said: “Armor breaks > character becomes naked, was a bit too much I think. Players should have the option for it to not happen.”

More Little Bits And Pieces Of Soulcalibur V From Director, Daishi Odashima

Perhaps this is for the best, considering a third tweet he made later: “What happens to the females characters after 17 years? Well you know, people age…”

Moving along, Odashima also confirmed that Junichi Nakatsuru would be composing music for Soulcalibur V when a fan asked him about and Keiki Kobayashi. Odashima didn’t comment on the latter. On the subject of the subject of music, he also expressed that he’d like to include unlockable music from previous Soul games in Soulcalibur V.

Odashima’s tweets weren’t all about the game’s look and style; he touched upon combat, too. In reply to a fan asking about a feature from Soul Edge, where both characters would lock their weapons against each other, Odashima replied: “Got removed cos it slowed the fight down.” It should be noted, though, that he was referring to its removal from the series in general, not Soulcalibur V specifically.

Another Twitter follower expressed concerns about Soulcalibur V being too easy, to which he replied: “Don’t worry. I created Setsuka remember? ” Setsuka is commonly cited as a character that’s difficult for inexperienced players to use.

Finally, Odashima also commented on the game’s story. Declining to say which endings from previous games were considered canonical, he stated, “I’ll leave it up to your imagination.” Soulcalibur V’s story mode is something Odashima hopes to improve upon, relative to Soulcalibur IV. He also said that he hopes to improve lip-synching in English when characters talk, despite the fact that Soulcalibur is a Japanese series.

    More

Famitsu has its first look at Soul Calibur V following its announcement last week. Here's what's said in the magazine, as passed along at Sokuho.

As previously detailed, the game is set 17 years after SCIV. The main character, the guy shown in the reveal trailer, is Patroklos, son of Sophitia. He makes use of the same short sword type as his mom, and also uses the Arcadia Shield. If you really want specifics, Patroklos is 177 centimeters tall, has blood type B, was born on September 13, and is 19-years-old.

The magazine also profiles returning character Siegfried, who's become 40 years old. He makes use of the Requiem weapon he used in SCI and SCIII.

In an interview with the magazine, producer Hisaharu Tago gives a few hints about the game, without getting too specific:

The game has new characters, old characters with new weapons, and guest characters.
Tago is hoping to have at least as many characters as SCIV.
Tago said to expect special weapons, although he wouldn't share specifics.
Regarding gameplay systems, Tago said one can say there are and there aren't changes. We'll have to wait for an update for details.
The development staff has been given new blood, but the main members remain unchanged. Tago expects to end up releasing something a bit different from past entries.
Tago promised to not let fans down.

Famitsu reports that Soul Calibur V is currently 10% complete. A release is set for 2012.

I'd like to seem the focus more this time on the concept of anti-aliasing, but a PC gamer can dream, can't he?

Based on the weapon and greying hair, assuming that's Mitsurugi, and if so, why does it look like he is showing more skin than Cassandra? What's going on with this game >.>

It’s time for another quick round of Soulcalibur V updates from director Daishi Odashima, now referred to as “Odashima-sensei” by some of his more loyal followers. Let’s see what he has to say.

“Reason why we don’t have crowds in the background is because of the game system (ring outs etc) and they slow down the processing speed,” Odashima started out. Soon after, he commented on whether or not Taki would be returning for Soulcalibur V:

“Is Taki returning? Well you know, she’s getting a little old. But then again ninja’s are like super humans… hmm..”

Is Taki Returning? And Other Musings From Soulcalibur Vs Director

Following that, Odashima tweeted the artwork above, created by character designer, Takuji Kawano for an older Soulcalibur game, along with the image the right. You can click on both to view them enlarged.

He then commented on Hwang’s absence from Soulcalibur V: “There is no data here to say Hwang is popular. [Tekken producer] Harada-san was told the same ages ago. It’s hard to judge cos popularity changes with time…” Odashima also emphasized that he checks fan forums, but that accepting requests word for word often doesn’t bring the best results. “We need to filter the info,” Odashima stated.

Way late responding to this, but speaking as someone who has filled every data slot with create-a-characters, I'll usually make a 'Tower' version and a regular VS. version of a character, so I can have my pretties and punch you, too. Holy fuck though I wanted more heavy armor options for girls.

But then your characters would be left completely defenseless.

The Lighter, More Elegant Soulcalibur V May be Taking New Cues from Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat
There's a new entry in the long-running Soulcalibur series, Namco's weapons-based fighter, a game that its creators say is a "lighter, faster, more elegant" battle of swords and souls. It's also a game with "more dynamic" battles, one drawing some influence from Street Fighter IV and Mortal Kombat.

Soulcalibur V, says producer Hisaharu Toga, will place a bigger emphasis on big, dramatic moves, the kind one might see in a Street Fighter game. You might call them EX moves, or just recognize them as the action-pausing super attacks that can be charged up in battle, then unleashed upon an unlucky for who lets his guard down.

I saw Soulcalibur V in action at E3 2011, watching as Namco folks played battles between new characters Patroklos and Pyrrah. They're the brother-sister team with Greek heritage, the son and daughter of Soulcalibur fighter Sophitia. They're just two of the 20 to 30 characters planned to be in the game, which is said to feature a cast that's about 50% new, 50% returning.

Patroklos and Pyrrah both had EX-style super moves in the game, moves that made the screen darken before each fighter unleashed a fantastical combo attack of stabs and uppercutting moves. An EX-style meter next to each fighter's health bar filled up to three times, then could be unleashed in a double-hadouken joystick motion upon an opponent.

In the demo I saw, which the game's producers said was an early prototype and used a good portion of Soulcalibur IV's assets and animations, two other fighters were available: Japanese swordsman Mitsurugi and German knight Siegfried. The former looked like he was the 17 years older that he should have been in V, sporting long gray hair, the latter less so. Both looked good, both were visually slightly more impressive, thanks to the new game's new engine, which now sports visual tricks like image based lighting and ambient occlusion.

I only saw battles occur on two stages, one on a floating ship, the other in a cage dubbed the "Torture Chamber" that prevented ring outs.

While I saw a dozen or so single-player fights, Soulcalibur V's producer said the game is a more story-driven fighter than its peers and predecessors. And when I asked him about the developer's approach to telling that story, specifically whether they'd paid attention to the smart single-player campaign of this year's Mortal Kombat, he sort of said "yes."

Tago said the team is "aware of the trend" of that game's cinematic, plot-driven approach to telling a fighting game story. He added that Soulcalibur V's campaign mode would benefit the player with a set of new features, adding some new tutorial-like aspects to help players learn the its fighting systems.

The new Soulcalibur looks promising, even at this early stage. It sounds like there are many improvements, changes and tweaks to come, so expect things to change over the next year. Soulcalibur V is currently planned for release on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime next year.

Yep, nothing like super moves that totally disrupt the flow of the fight.

Can't be original, eh? Next we'll hear that they're putting in fatalities, tripling the size of Taki's thighs, and removing her massive man-package. Oh, and she can only kick now, or standing fierce.
