As it is, the Royal Albert Hall performance of the song is also fucking brilliant while we're on the topic.

I would probably kill for the chance to go back in time to see Dylan and The Hawks. I saw Dylan a couple of years back, great concert, some gems I didn't expect to see like Lonesome Death of Hattie Caro and Visions of Johanna. Didn't get Desolation Row which made me kind of sad. The guy I went with was expecting classic Dylan so he was really disappointed.

Actually, speaking of fucking incredible albums, I'd never really given Astral Weeks a good honest playthrough before. It knocked me to the ground, man.

Rolling Thunder Revue version of this song is fucking killer. Goddamn I'd kiss that bass player.

Rolling Thunder Revue was something else. The version of Shelter From the Storm is damn near the best example of Dylan reinventing his own songs out there.

I'm just really partial to Jimi's take on the song, lots more umph in the vocals... and those sweet Jimi licks when they hold the G. Dylan once said he didn't know he wanted to be a fulltime songwriter until he wrote this song.... keep in mind this was like 6 fucking albums in. Dylan = fucking brilliance so it's a tough comparison... However All Along the Watchtower I will say Jimi actually made the cover better than the original and Dylan even said after hearing Jimi's version he'd never play the song the same again.

    Fun facts with Day.
Yeah I knew about the All Around the Watchtower story. I think Dylan even relinquished ownership of the song in a way, saying Jimi turned it into something he can never replicate. Like a Rolling Stone and especially Positively 4th Street helped me through a rough time in my first year of college when I was fighting with an old high school friend and drifting apart from them.

Warren Zevon's a hell of a songwriter, and this album has some beautiful solo 12-string work on it.

Yeah, any performance you hear of All Along the Watchtower by Dylan is basically the Hendrix version now.
