As anticipated from seeing the title, I have located a bloodbath. Without reading all 7 pages of this pissing contest O/Almace PLDs can do some pretty cool things, and having both really isn't that rare. But other than some very particular situations other jobs are generally more efficient.

Seems like a lot of the people dismissing PLD don't know what the fuck. It's actually a pretty nice job for cleaving depending on the situation. With proper atma and gear you can kill most mobs in 3 Aeolian Edges. Native phalanx + good defense + good PDT set + shield block > 0 damage taken on most mobs and there's Sentinel to back you up just in case. It's one of the few self sufficient cleaving jobs which is nice because it may enable your group to cleave more than one set of mobs (the 'efficiency' yield being beyond any of the marginal /who the fuck cares/ increases in cleave kill speed discussed thus far.) Also, many mobs that are cleaved should be taken next to a wall then backed up a bit so they all line up in front of you (otherwise it's a huge pain in the ass trying to target them with WS.) You'll get a shitload of TP from shield mastery this way, enough to compete with Retaliation. It also has a variety of weaponskills which are useful for conflux brewing (which is half the reason people cleave mobs in the first place.)

Either way, for the express purpose of cleaving, I'd definitely rate it above any job that requires support. If you're cleaving for time to do stuff in the zone, a different job is certainly better, but for Isgeband/Azdaja/Dragua/etc. pop set cleaving, then it's definitely one of the best.

Your example doesn't support your claim though. They didn't make pup good, so of course people still think lolpup. And as a counter example, look at all the bandwagon ninjas. All they did was give them another tier of dual wield and let them easily cap haste, and suddenly instead of being lolnin they are one of the most popular jobs. Pld was super popular for a long time after it was clearly useless. You still see idiots bringing plds to abyssea now. If SE buffed pld in some reasonable way people would flock to it again.

I don't agree with either of you. I'm gonna suggest that pld was popular among LS leaders, who felt most in control while tanking. Show me an hnm shell pre-80 and I'll show you a shell led by a group-funded aegis pld. Same goes for normal shells, just blurple instead of aegis. pld has always been popular and always will be because of the power trip tanking was back then. who will protect us if not a fug elvaan or hume in gray bird armor?

ps I never thought I'd be defending pld but a lot of you need to step off. OP showcased an unusual and neat way to kill mobs and you're legit arguing with him over 10 seconds' worth of efficiency?

I didn't say anything about why pld was popular, just that it was, and that it isn't permanently afflicted with "lolpld" disease. And for both of you whiteknighting this crap, if someone comes in and claims "look pld is the best" when it clearly is not, "no it isn't" is a pretty reasonable response.
