Looking for car stereo

Hey all,

I'm looking for a stereo for my car. Let me be blunt. I don't need anything great. My car is a 97 Lumina that I bought for 500 bucks. It's got low mileage and runs great. MPG leaves something to be desired, but whatever.

If I can get something for under $150 that included a few speakers to install, anything recommended would be appreciated. I know a decent amount about home theater stuff, but when it comes to cars I am retarded. The only features which I really need are CD, possible XM, and an auxiliary/usb input jack. I have someone that can install it, but no idea what to pick. There are literally hundreds to choose from.

If you can find or suggest something cheaper than $150, even better. Thanks for the help!

So you want a deck and speakers for under $150? Only thing I can really think of is Walmart has a deal with a Pioneer deck and 4 speakers for under $100. The deck is pretty shitty, 1 set of RCA out's so you can run an amp for a sub later if you want to but you'll need a Line-Out Converter if you want to run an amp for your speakers. Also this deck you can't really run your ipod like normal. My cousin bought the deal, and I noticed that it breaks up all your songs into random folders. No sort of order, each folder seemed to be in somewhat alphabetic order but sometimes it would skip around, and it wasn't like 1 folder was a-d, each one went through pretty much the whole alphabet. So he had to memorize what folder number and song number within that folder that songs he wanted to listen to were in.

Anyways, I can't find it on their website, but I know they have them here in Hawaii at least.

For $150 just look around at any JVC Pioneer Sony or Kenwood headunit. As above poster mentioned, if you want an Ipod USB connection you need to make sure it specifically states 'Made for Ipod' as the base USB models are designed only to read a stick, whereas Ipod units will keep the folder structure on the Ipod and charge it as well. That said an aux will play anything with a 3.5mm socket, it just won't charge your Ipod or allow control through the stereo.

As for speakers, do you have precut holes behind the door cards? If yes then get a set of speakers to fit them. Any known brand of coaxial speakers will do the job the same since the RMS is usually higher on them than the output on the stereo (most stereos do 4x40 to 4x52 and most 10 and 13cm speakers will have an RMS of 50+, 17cm are usually around 60-70).

Don't live in america so can't recommend any specific deals but the equivilent of $150 over here would get you a Sony GTX540 and 4 Alpine 1325 (13cm speakers) without much shopping around, though thats online prices including any shipping.

Just to clarify something, most decks "claim" 4x50 or 4x52, but they actually only put out about 4x18, the newer decks put out 4x22. The 4x50 is a "peak power" rating aka you will only see this for a split second if a bolt of lightning strikes your car.
