Idk if this was answered in the thread itself, or one of the links posted but, no, burial at sea is only ok in very specific circumstances (like dying on a boat). We did however, follow every other part of the culture we could, washing the body, quick burial, etc etc.

I'm pretty sure a big reason for the sea burial was so that his followers would not have a grave over which they could build a shrine for him, cementing his status as a martyr. I'm sure he'll be considered a martyr anyway by some, but symbols are a big deal and denying them such a symbol is a symbol itself.

It's not like Obama was even taking credit for anything beyond authorizing the strike, which is exactly what any sitting president would do. He was much more gracious about the whole situation than Dubya (or Rush himself, had it occurred during the previous administration) would have been.

And yet if the mission was a huge failure, you can bet it would have been Obama's ass on the line. Anyone remember Operation Eagle Claw in Iran during the 80's? Huge embarrassment for Carter and cost him re-election.

That sure seems to be the case, yes.

What I find interesting is that nobody is really talking about the people captured. I imagine for them to be at the compound, they would have to be high ranking members or of some important judging from the paranoia Osama seemed to have.

Was apparently mostly just family, and of course Osama and his courrier. A couple low ranking guys were killed there as well it appears.


Anyways... I have mixed feelings on the issue.

I'm a little disappointed at the extent of the celebration for someone's death, even if it is a really bad dude. I'm more frustrated though at all the talk of bringing peace. That's just straight up bullshit, you don't create peace by killing those that would break it.

I know a ton of people would have been unhappy about it, but I'd much rather have seen him captured and locked in solitary for the rest of his life. No news, no interaction besides getting food and cleanliness.

Obviously I'm against the death penalty, and this has nothing to do with a fair trial or whatever, the dude's guilty as can be, just... it's disappointing that so many people are so happy to see people killed in cold blood, no matter who or why.

I think the worst part is the activities that people engage in the celebrate the incident. I've heard of people shoot fireworks near crowds in celebration. Clearly, not a hazard.
