Long before he was overseeing efforts to nab or kill Osama bin Laden, Bill McRaven graduated with a degree in journalism at the University of Texas.

McRaven, now a vice-admiral, had been something of a bin Laden hunter for at least a half-dozen years before successfully directing the Sunday attack as the leader of the Joint Special Operations Command.

McRaven, who hails from San Antonio, began preparing for his own storied career as a Navy SEAL, the elite special operations forces, while an undergraduate at UT.

“He had drive,” said James Gruetzner, who served in the same Navy ROTC batallion as McRaven. “He went on extraordinarily long runs to stay in shape. He was very dedicated.”

“He become very focused on SEAL training,” said Curtis Raetz, who also served in the battalion. “He was able to lap us all no matter how hard we tried.”

He also had smarts. In 1995, he wrote “Spec Ops: Case Studies in Special Operations Warfare Theory and Practice,” in which he developed his own definition of a special operation as one “conducted by forces specially trained, equipped, and supported for a specific target whose destruction, elimination, or rescue (in the case of hostages), is a political or military imperative.”

Elevating McRaven to a fourth star, Defense Secretary Bob Gates said the Joint Special Operations Command “ruthlessly and effectively (took) the fight to America’s most dangerous and vicious enemies.”

He also showed a capacity for contrition. In April 2010, a couple of months after a Special Forces team killed an Afghan police chief, a prosecutor and three unarmed women, McRaven pled forgiveness to a local patriarch, bringing with him an offering of two sheep as part of a local custom to make amends.

all mainstream (hell, all) American news sources have disgusting bias. fox is the only important conservative one aside from talk radio, so it gets a lot of distrationary attention from all the others. I can't stand to watch any news channels anymore, they're all too deeply entrenched in their political views to get a straight story.

US Special Forces lost a helicopter in their mission to take down Osama bin Laden. And while previous reports—and a peek at the tail—have so far indicated that it was a Black Hawk MH-60, the latest speculation is that this wasn't just your average berzerker chopper. It was a secret stealth edition. No wonder they burned that sucker to the ground.

According to Bill Sweetman at Aviation Week:

It was a secretly developed stealth helicopter, probably a highly modified version of an H-60 Blackhawk. Photos published in the Daily Mail and on the Secret Projects board show that the helicopter's tail features stealth-configured shapes on the boom and tip fairings, swept stabilizers and a "dishpan" cover over a non-standard five-or-six-blade tail rotor. It has a silver-loaded infra-red suppression finish similar to that seen on some V-22s.

The modifications Sweetman mentions include aerodynamic and flight control adjustments that allow for a reduced rotor speed (and, subsequently, less noise), radar cross-section reduction to improve jamming, and I'm sure other top-secret goodies.

Sweetman also mentioned that the highly sensitive technologies aboard the stealth Black Hawk indicate just how important this mission was to the US; allowing that bag of tricks to fall into Pakistani—or any other—hands would have been a sizable breach of defense intelligence. Fortunately, it appears that SEAL Team 6 succeeded in destroying the critical tech before they flew back to safety.
