Helicopter flight mostly relies on a pretty consistent flow of air... nearby large buildings/architecture can fuck with that and cause weird flows of air when very low to the ground. Also, they can't stay still for very long since the blades pushing down on the air (creating upward lift) will eventually create a flow of air being pushed downwards, circling around and back up, and down through the blades again, resulting in less and less lift as the air begins to cycle faster through it. I imagine it was a combination of these issues that caused the accident. However, you would think that the pilots would have enough training to be wary of this and avoid such an incident with such important technology and expensive equipment...

The only reason the one chopper went down was because of a mechanical failure causing the engine to stall. At least that's what they've been claiming.

The government there didn't even know they were there, if they lingered too long there was a chance of getting engaged by Pakistan military forces. It's possible they set explosives or set fire to the chopper and had to leave without being able to confirm its complete destruction.

Even if that were the case, Pakistan is in no position to negotiate if the U.S. were to demand the pieces back or even access to the compound. They already look like they were either hiding him or were just flat-out retarded the whole time. If the piece in question is of that much concern I bet thats happening behind closed doors right now already.

What was reported on CNN today was that the tail piece that keeps coming up in photos was on the outside of the compound wall whereas what was blown up was on the inside of the wall, supposedly leaving them to choose between staying longer to destroy that as well or getting out.

Having to continually speculate is getting old, though, I'd rather just wait for a full, consistent story to come out.

I think you missed the part where even the material composite of the craft is top secret (and they obviously have that now), let alone entire parts of the bird are still fully together (upper assembly, etc). This little adventure just gave the Chinese about 10-15 years of research.
