personally, i think it can work for some people but not others. i have not seen any long-lasting successes firsthand, but i know there are people in the world who happily live in poly amorous relationships. i think it takes a specific type of person to make it work in a way that makes all parties happy, and that it can become very complicated. you kind of have to create a whole new set of rules and boundaries, and you have to take into account the feelings of more people. not all "open" relationships simply consist of a core couple that has NSA sex with just any person, so it's a whole lot of grey area to be charted and then renegotiated and renegotiated and so on until shit either works out or they call it quits. it seems like a lot more work than just worrying about one other person, and starting that all over again after one relationship ends seems exhausting to me.
i'm not interested in trying to convert a monogamous relationship into a poly amorous one. i think for me personally, it'd be emotionally exhausting to be grappling with the jealousy and trust issues that would inevitably come up. the way i view committed relationships just doesn't allow for it. if i were divorced and i went into a poly amorous situation as a peripheral person, i might participate in that for a period of time. it's not a lifestyle choice i would make on a permanent basis, though.
I knew a couple that was together for about 5 years, then mutually met another person and the the three of them have been in a relationship for a few years now. For some people it works for some it doesn't.
I think whatever floats your boat or lifts your luggage is fine so long as it doesn't actively negatively affect another being.
