    DD-WRT Internet Throughput Issues

This morning, I finished changing out my Asus RT-N16's firmware for the recommended K26 14929 Broadcomm build of DD-WRT. I've configured it appropriately and have my full network up and running, but my internet throughput has dropped.

Formerly, with the Asus stock firmware, I was averaging 2.1MB/s download speeds via HTTP, and anywhere from 1-2MB/s downloads on strong torrents with DHT enabled. Online speed tests, such as those on BroadbandReports.com, labeled my rates at about 20,000Kb/s down and 1,000Kb/s up.

Presently, downloads aren't breaking the 1MB/s barrier, and tests rate my speeds at 9197Kb/s down and a constantly wavering though lower average of up rates. QoS isn't enabled, and I've reset the entire network a few times, but I can't recover my old speeds. What I'm operating at now is far from miserable, but the loss is nonetheless irritating. I've read this, but it doesn't apply to me, although I've tried its recommendations anyways.

    Opinions/suggestions?

First thing I would do is bypass the router and plug directly into the modem long enough to do a speed test and see if it's your ISP being shitty. After that I would start looking into the router.

I'm an idiot, you wrote K26 in the OP.

I'm with xopher, check ur ISP without the router before you go pointing fingers are your router.

While connected directly to the modem, I'm back to my old averages. At the moment, I'm downloading something from MegaUpload at a steady 2.2MB/s. BroadbandReports testing was also higher, placing me at 13,086Kb/s this time.

Use a consistent source to check your bandwidth. Pick one server on speedtest.net and keep using it.

Don't use megaupload as it connects to different servers that can have their own issues.

This is what I ordinarily do. Since I'm in Los Angeles, its test servers are the ones I use first. Afterward, I may try a few which are further away, but LinkLine is the one I rely upon the majority of the time.

Would you have another HTTP download to suggest as a baseline?

Originally, I thought of flashing a mini build of DD-WRT and switching to Tomato, but I'm not having any trouble using DD-WRT currently. I've encountered very little terminology that I don't understand, so I suppose my aging MCSE knowledge is still worth something.

No I don't have an http alternative because they all use redirects to different servers. I guess I don't understand why you're not using speedtest.net.

I conduct all of my throughput tests on wired connections. While I do some things wireless (such as streaming small things, like MP3 files), I conduct anything even remotely demanding via 5e cables.

The tests on BroadbandReports are basically the same thing, although you manually choose the servers. I tried SpeedTest, and I did get better results with the servers they automatically chose -- good enough as to where I'm not really going to worry about it.

I'll chalk it up to unusual activity on my ISP's side, and hope it goes back to normal either later today or soon enough.
