lol@ comparing the inconvenience of having to clean a litter box(which takes all of two minutes, oh god!) to having your nasty outdoor cat bringing in a myriad of pests.

    Declaw or ->

Mix in some of the cat litter with soil outside. Make sure that there's a good open space for them to use or just stick a litter box outside with sand in it.

Edit: used cat litter works best because it'll have their scent.

when I was a kid (and still today) all I wanted in life was a cat, but I wasn't allowed because it would have done absurd damage to antiques in the house. it's better to let the cat be itself than cut off its fingernails.

Just curious, with the squirt bottle, do you squirt it in their face or the body? Never read or seen anyone train a kitten.

Don't fucking declaw that poor kitten. We own two cats and trim their nails with special clippers we got at Petco. We just wait until they're sleeping and clip, takes 3-5 mins per cat. Get a scratch post anyway, though. I also second the water bottle technique. But yeah, 3-5 mins every two weeks or so VS cutting that kitten's fingers. Not a hard choice.

Usually when our cats are mischievous, I try and solid snake spray their body. I say solid snake because they usually know they're doing something wrong and bolt if they see me coming lol.

Even if you "train" them, cats are living things. They'll get stressed out or pissed or god knows what and will scratch shit.

You're fucked regardless then. No matter how well you train it, the cat will eventually piss on the floor due to accident or sickness.

My cat used to bite a lot when she was a kitten, she grew out of it though. I didn't use a squirt bottle or anything, I just kinda shoved her off it it got a little too rough.

as far as getting her to not scratch furniture, cat a scratching post and grind some fresh catnip into it. That's what I do and none of my shit is ripped/torn/etc.

    HEY GUESS WHAT.

This is what is called a cat nail trimmer. Tbh, you can just use a regular nail trimmer, but this is easier on peeps who don't know wtf.
If you trim the cats nails on a weekly basis + plenty of scratching posts you don't need to declaw the cat.

All you do is stick their nail into the slot and cut. THe big thing is though don't cut them too short, if you look carefully you'll see they have a vein in their nails. You don't want to cut the vein. Just start at the very tips until you get more comfortable at handling the kitten/cat, and once you do you can look and see where the vein is and be able to cut a little more without hitting it.

Also, kittens bite. You can do the water bottle thing, or just get over it. When we got our new kitten you would have thought she was a lion and our toes were gazelles. She woke us up every morning at like 7:00 attacking our feet while we were sleeping.

We just pushed her every time she did it, and she stopped after about the first 3 months.

It's playing and they love to do it. I hope you guys plan on giving the kitten a lot of attention since it's going to be an indoor cat.

Hijack, what is a good cat for outdoors only? Girlfriend wants a cat and I won't have hair and piss all over the place so it has to stay outside.

edit: Needs to be something that can outrun(or fight?) a coyote, and maybe some big dogs.

iono where people get the piss thing, but maybe I'm just lucky with cats. Cats will naturally want to go in the litter box because of the smell. They are not like dogs, you don't have to train them. Just first day you get it, put it inside the box, they'll probably pee right away, and forever go back there. (btw that's as long as you keep the box clean, THEY WILL go outside it if they feel it's full.)

as to hair if you really really don't want hair in the house get a rex:

    http://www.catfacts.org/cornish-rex-cat-facts.jpg

    They are completely hairless.

I can't see the logic in getting a cat and then never letting it in the house.

[edit] if you really really insist on an outdoor cat, go the animal shelter and find a cat that is having difficulty getting a home because it's a loner and feral. the breed isn't going to matter and you might as well try and save a life. Downside is it may easily just run away before learning you will provide it with food everyday.

your girlfriend wants a cat, so your way of compromising is getting a cat but not letting it in the house? I think the animal you want here is a territorial wild animal, maybe a raccoon. they live outside pretty well.

What the fuck am I reading in this thread.

If you're going to be a responsible pet owner, you train your pet. Get some catnip spray (or buy some catnip itself and infuse it with water in a small spray bottle). Buy a scratching post. Spray said water concoction on the scratching post. Also spray this concoction on its toys and other things you prefer it to be playing with than your funriture or good floors. Catnip makes cats feel a kind of excited euphoria - once the cat understands that playing or scratching these objects makes them feel good, they'll gravitate more toward these objects than whatever you don't want them to fuck with.

Don't declaw the fucking cat. If that cat ever gets outside and she doesn't have her claws at all, you can count her fucking dead. Like Ksandra said, buy some nail clippers, educate yourself on the vein, trim your cat's nails regularly. This goes along with training the animal - sure cats don't generally like their nails trimmed, but regular trimming, especially on a consistent schedule, will make the cat less resistant to getting its nails trimmed. If you're going to get it declawed because you're a lazy ass who does not want to do this, why do you have a cat in the first place?

Also, kittens bite. They are playing with you. Do you have some problems with the way kittens play? Deal with it. If you attempt to punish your animal because its trying to play with or be close to you, it will end up becoming an anti-social animal because it will soon learn that interaction with you = punishment.

While I know you won't listen, don't declaw the cat =( It just makes life very difficult for them for something you could fix by trimming nails on a bi-weekly basis and having a scratching post for them.

What about when you finally move out of the apartment, or do you plan on living there for 10-15 years? Did you not think that far in advanced? What if you move to a home with a yard and your cat or you both want her to go outside more often for the exercise and fun; guess what, she can't. Overall it's just a horrible thing to do for your cat.

Bitches love cats. Seriously, I've never had a cat that pissed outside of the litterbox unless it was outside. Never heard of a cat that will stand and fight a coyote or a dog on the streets either, they just run away

    A stuffed one.

And declawing a cat is basically amputating the last bone on each toe for your own convenience. Get a nail clippers, shit's not that hard.
