All side character stuff is basically filler. The books are only from Sookie's PoV keep in mind, so a lot of other stuff is filler:

#Jason story is cannon aside the sheriff stuff
    #Jess/Hoyt is obviously filler
    #Sam/Tommy is pure filler
#Lafette died at the end of Book1, so he is obviously filler.
#Book 2 sucked, this is a fact.. not much they could do to make that main story better.. But Maryaan stuff was 95% filler.
#Tarra stuff is mainly filler, though she did date teh crazy vampire last season so that was relevant.
#All this fairy land stuff is filler. Yes, Sookie is a Fairy and her fairy-god-mother (lol) Claudine is in the books, but the whole "magical fairy-land" is filler

    Yeah, just watched episode 2 . . .

    Spoiler: show
What the fuck, why is she dead?! Couldn't she just, I don't know, move out of the way of the bullets?

Also they really need to stop panning away from Tommy's dick when he's naked. Just sayin'.

it wouldn't be the first time somebody died and they came back to life! Unless you see them turn to dust, they can come back. I just don't see how they can do the later storyline w/o the Queen.

Basic Synaps of what I'm talking about... obvious spoiler.. but just the general plot of the next book, won't list anything big. Most can be known from reading the back of the book

    Spoiler: show
Sookie's cousin, Hailey, gets killed and leaves everything to Sookie... blah blah. Hailey is close to the queen, investigation ensues. The Queen is getting married and its a huge deal in the vampire world and she thinks Hailey died because of somebody going for the queen.

But ya, entire book revolves around the queen and the marriage and it changes how a lot of things happen in thee book afterwards. So dunno how they can skip it >.>

    Does goo count?

I liked both episodes so far. I've never read the books but I've been enjoying the show. Aside from the fairy nonsense (which didn't last all that long) and Terra's story line (which I dislike every season) my only gripe was that I don't really like where they are taking Jess and Hoyt's story line.

As someone who hasn't read the books, I've loved the show so far, including these last two episodes.

Are the books comparable in quality to, say, ASoIaF? I'm curious if it'd be worth it to read them.

Hmm, not sure what to say. I think season 1 of the show was good, season 3 was pretty good, and season 4 so far seems more interesting than season 3 was...season 2 I wish I hadn't watched, at all. I'm not sure what to think of the filler vs not stuff...TV shows from a first person perspective generally don't work as well...it's clunky, long, and much harder to try to give the viewer insight into the characters mind than it is in a book, so I'd be glad they went away from that. Even in GoT, I'm kinda glad (though sad at the same time) that they went away from the model of trying to give you said insight into the character's PoV, I just don't think it works well in TV. I guess I can see how someone who read/enjoyed the books wouldn't like something going away from them (and if they had changed major things in GoT, I'd stop watching entirely tbh), but I think overall the "filler" doesn't seem so bad to me. It feels like it's just trying to keep the viewers in touch with what all the "major" characters are doing, which is a good thing overall.

Anyway, the magical fairy land scene was pretty awful, I definitely cringed and thought it just felt like some awful low-budget show for a bit there, but I'm glad it's over and am doing a great job pretending it didn't happen! ;p

Ok this is making me mad, I hate when this happens.... Who the hell is the real estate agent? I know I have seen her in something else. i think it was a movie, and she was a bad guy or something like that. It doesn't seem to list her name on the credits and I can't find anything from google searching. Please help! It is driving me nuts! lol

Edit: I found it, she was the reporter and Lithgow's daughter in Dexter season 4. That was bugging me lol...

Edit: Just finished the 2nd episode. It's overall not that bad, besides the first scenes with Tara... Lol MMA Lesbo.. but, when I first read that one of the members would turn gay this season, I knew it was going to be her. I also agree that they have way to much going on so far for only 10 episodes, but I guess we will see how it plays out. I'm just happy the fairy crap was only the first 5 min, and I hope it is over with, but I doubt it..

Ok.... just watched the episode and wtf. It was really good (actually Jess/Hoyt stuff was the worst imo /sadface), but it was all filler >.>; I mean it's kinda cool they are changing stuff around so much as to keep it fresh for those who read the books. But wtf happened, how the hell did Bill become the King? is for sure the biggest wtf moment. When Eric was listening to Bill at Sookie's house I was like "why the hell is Eric bowing to bill".. but it makes sense now.

Dunno, they are turning everything around the books, I mean the fairy stuff was all to help sookie, there was never anything evil about them. So I dunno where anything is going now lol

its official(for me at least) the only thing True Blood has in common with the Southern Vampire mysteries is names of characters. Pretty apparent Alan Ball wanted to completely divorce himself from the books. Guess I should start watching it with that in mind so I can try to enjoy it.

Oh yeah, did the whole opening scene w/ the wicked witches and throwing fireballs remind anybody else of Harry Potter? Was the first thing that came to my mind

Gotta agree that the two episodes so far have been pretty zzz. Tried to get through the novels in the past and zzz. Season 3 was zzz. The last half of season 2 was zzz. C'mon True Blood

I am leaning less towards zzz and more towards lol ever since season 2. Every time a new character shows up I start the guessing game... are they are witch? A fairy? A panthertigerliondogbird? A wizard? A Presbyterian? The backseat of a Volkswagen? A Galka? C'MON GALKA! The show is just 90% silly. Last season was probably my favorite after suffering through season 2, but anymore I am more laughing at the show than being seriously drawn in to it.

Did they explain how Eric got out of the cement or did I completely miss it?

Not only is it impossible for Bill to of been able to Kill Sofie Ann (because of age - bill is like the youngest vamp on the show - aside Jess), but how the hell would Eric not kill him for what he did

Did you not watch Episode two, Kat? It explained everything about Sofie Ann / Bill / Eric...

    Spoiler: show
Human soldiers with lots of guns and silver/wooden bullets came in with Bill and shot her at one time.. followed by that lady vampire that's always on the news. Her/Bill had this planned the whole time so Bill could become King of Lousiana. Or so it is to my understanding.

And for how he got out, Pam dug him out. In the last episode of S3 she said "I'll never be able to get all this cement out of my hair" or something like that. He probably "called" her where she gets shivers and knows where he is at.

Naw, I haven't watched Ep2 yet... I'm waiting until Sunday so it's not a two weeks wait for a new episode. Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. I should have re-watched the last few episodes of S3 before S4 started. Thanks for the reminder

To me it looks like they're setting up Jessica to go on a killing spree or something so that Bill will have to deal with her.
