Burning smell...(electrical)

Alright, so I just got woken up by my room mates because they said that they were trying to figure out the source of a burning smell. I'm "staying" in a dorm, so we turned off the air and found that it was coming from one of the vents in the hallway, which was still blowing air so we're assuming it's coming from somewhere else, and isn't our AC unit. We closed that vent. It smells like something electrical overheated or something similar to that. Left the AC off until the morning, but I just got up to check and the smell is still persisting. Now here-in lies the problem; yesterday was the last day for check outs, my room mate got an extension to stay in the dorms. Me and his girlfriend (fuck yo english it's 5am) checked out yesterday. She's staying in his room, and we unlocked my room from the outside and I'm staying back in my room for a little bit because I'm leaving for a trip on the 17th. I would think that it's the building's AC, but it doesn't smell in the hallway nor in the girlfriend's old room (it's across the hall and her card still works to get in). Anyone have an idea of where it could come from? I'm probably going to have to wind up moving my stuff into another suite and have to call them to come fix it or whatever the case is.

Stepped out in the hallway (the main hallway), came back in and didn't smell it. A/c maintenance people actually just stopped by since they are changing filters in all the rooms right now. I think they said they were putting in a work order or something, I'll ask my room mate later. They didn't notice anything.

Most likely the motor or transformer is overheating. Probably not good for your health though so crack open a window if you smell it.
