I like the process of gearing up w/friends and meeting new people. Digital pixels are sexy!

For me its about the evolving challenge of learning the class and being one of the better people playing said class. I like to be one of those healers ppl want in their party.. or one of the dps ppl know will do well and not die to stupid stuff. This was a very strong in XI for me, and it had a lot of challenges in getting gear and completing content (least back in CoP / TouA days). Being one of the first to finish CoP story and be like 1/20 ppl in Al'tia(sp) was a great accomplishment and it's something other mmo's haven't been able to capture. Hell, XI doesn't even capture that feeling anymore.

Another big thing for me is exploration. I like zones that have hidden areas or NM's to hunt. I know ppl hate the "camping" thing, and maybe it's because XI was my first mmo, but that type of activity has a special place in my mmo heart.

Of all the elements and aspects of the genre that keep me coming back, I do it for the people. Not just to socialize but also observe. I am a psych grad student finishing at the end of the year and people just fascinate me. Sometimes it's bad, but most of the time it's good. Unity and friendship is something I place a high value in. I abhorr drama and just do my own thing and it's nice to be surrounded by people who are mature, have a thick skin, and feel the same way. Sure, there are times we falter, but for the most part, the team remains strong and that is really what matters.

A secondary reason I play mmos is to lead. I've been told I'm a natural-born leader, but I wouldn't know how to feel any other way than how I just 'do'. There is just something being the hub and being able to bounce ideas off people, improve the group for everyone equally, and also lead the charge into new, unexplored content. Admittedly I enjoy the administrative aspects of leading as much if not more than actually playing. It's hard at times, but that social support from friends keeps me going more often than not.

That's my feelings in a nutshell.

Yea, I remember my linkshell was like the only linkshell in sea and we'd just go up there, get lost and farm stuff trying to figure out how shit worked. It was kind of annoying when SE slowly nerfed fights and I hear there isn't even a level cap on the content now so you can basically solo lots of it. Back when nobody could even beat Promyvions and being in sea, it felt really fucking good.

Killing big dragons with a group of friends is always fun. Your first MMO will always be your favourite, mine was Ultima Online.

Can't believe no one's said this..

    Drama.

MMOs have better drama than RL, and nothing will ever compete.

I think you're right about that one. XI was my first as well, and the only thing that comes close imo is Tera so far. Tried XIV, WoW, and Aion as well...nothing compares to the memories I have from XI though.

Having a small clique of online buddies that were skilled/competent to get actual shit done while simultaneously having the sense of humor to fuck with random pickup members and generally not take anything seriously. This the only thing that makes an MMORPG fun for me. Without the buddies, it's boring, without the sense of humor, it's unnecessarily stressful.

    (1) Never-ending aspect.
    (2) Community
    (3) Comparative aspect -- pitting your skills (and less-so gear) against other players

Would've agreed with this back when I played a MMO. But then I went to college.

Pretty much. To each their own, just keep it in your own yard.

Can't do Drama; that's typically why I leave MMOs. The human element is easily the greatest and worst thing about MMOs. Great when everyone works together (within a group) to get shit done, but terrible once that group starts getting greedy and tearing itself apart from within over loot/money/pixels. Lets not even talk about group vs. another group, like in XI. There's more than enough drama involved simply through a single group/guild/linkshell/ect. getting greedy and tainted.

That's why I prefer a tightly-knit and much smaller group over anything else when it comes to MMORPGs. Losing friends is a pretty good incentive not to screw anyone over. Plus, your bros/hos' genuine interest in helping you out is much more likely to earn you loots than a points system.

Fully agreeing w/ Fenux on this one, the drama on ffxi was about the best drama i've ever seen in any MMO and RL.

The drama was awesome. Had a ventrilo shared with another HNMLS a long time ago, we did Dynamis with them:

My LS:"They actually claimed Nid over us for the 1st time..."
Me: "Yep, Leet, train the spiders on um. I'll blame it on the JP LS who has never won claim."
Me on vent: "Blames on X JPLS member"
    Them: "SDFFJKLSDJFJSDFJJFSDJFJSD"
    My LS: Keels

Drama between those 2 groups and MPK war for months. My LS, killing everything. Epic days.

We never really had too much inner-LS drama in AS(Fenrir) or my LS on Alex. It was always interstate drama.

You people have no idea what real drama is until you've played a MMO where, when you die, other players can loot every single item on your character.
