FFXI was my first and only MMO. First it was to hang out with RL friend that lived 9 hours away. Then started meeting people and just fell for it. Being one of the first groups to get to Sea and having my then roommate (also the friend that use to be 9 hours away) write a guide that thousands used to get to sea, and the fact I was able to help him do that (Yes you know who, you know you read it!). I guess it comes down to the memories that I will never forget, and probably never be able to explain or express to anyone in the years to come.
I think the human element is actually the most detrimental aspect of a MMORPG.
While I agree that drama is always entertaining (I think it's the reason I started browsing these forums in the first place a few years ago), if you happen to be the victim of a scam or you become laughing stock within the whole community for some silly reason, it's definitely not fun.
From my observations I'd say that sticking with a close group of friends and not caring about anyone else seems to be the best way to enjoy the game.
For me, it's definitely the evolution of the game that makes a MMORPG interesting.
Buffs, nerfs, fixes, new gear outclassing old gear, old gear that nobody gave a damn at first that suddenly becomes incredibly popular (Sorc. Ring anyone?), players discovering new tactics and so forth.
