Gonna break it down

mnk/war is for damage dealing, mnk/nin is for tanking. * this is true if you /nin to dd your doing it wrong in or outside abyssea*

If someone tells you he is tanking as mnk/war he is probably just subbing war for damage and doing it in abyssea, because he doesnt care about the damage he takes ( abyssea, cure V , cure VI, infinite MP etc). * Also true 99% of whms do not have the 7 a tick auto refresh gear or even 5+, most are full timing af3+2 IF that. meaning they will run out of mp in any situation that's not old content outside of abyssea.

Counterstance doesnt block WS, range attacks and magic. 100% correct

and to clear it up if you tanking /war your not "tanking" your holding hate through superior dps , you'd take a hellva lot less dmg and counter just as much /nin "tanking" the same mob but your kill speed/dmg would be alot less. thats like saying war/sam is for dding not tanking , its both because /sam your dps is so high you are tank by default.

TL;DR Apparently You're not tanking unless you're /NIN, if you're MNK/WAR you aren't "Tanking" you're "holding hate by doing damage". His logic is, Since /NIN is more defensive, /war can't possibly be a tanking support job.

however it sounds like you're saying "you're not tanking if you're /war". our definitions might be different gokku, But When i think of tanking, I think "The guy fighting the mob and holding its attention". Thats all. You can tank a mob MNK/WAR, just as much as you tank MNK/NIN. You can even tank a mob MNK/WHM. Defensive Abilities doesn't make it tanking, living, fighting, and keeping the mobs attention is how you tank.

im talking in a functional sense , i can pull hate and hold it on monk/anything but when it comes to staying alive versus anything not 75 content or abyssea sub war is not the answer

Depending on the mob you are tanking will affect more if /WAR or /NIN is better anyways, with good support a whm can use cure V a lot without having MP issues. In a lot of cases where shadows get wiped easily, i much rather go /WAR to tank better and deal more damage along the way.

Its still tanking. If you're in Abyssea as WHM+MNK/WAR, the MNK/WAR is still the tank, Regardless of his support job. a "Tank" Has nothing to do with Subjob choices, Its simply an act/role you fill. a THF/DNC could be a tank, and so forth.

/NIN Doesn't make the tank, It makes it easier to tank, a tank is still a tank though.

Of course in Voidwatch You'd likely be /NIN, But if you could pull off /WAR you'd still be tanking if thats the role you were invited to fill. Again i feel our definitions/understanding of what tanking is are conflicting, not really what we're saying.

I don't think they're arguing what's the best "tank" sub just that it is still tanking. Tanking is simply holding hate on a mob, if you can do that on monk/war you're tanking it. Whether it's more or less effective is irrelevant.

yea but if you cant successful kill something while holding hate what is the point?
edit : let it be known i despise /nin tanking *today was the first time i broke out monk/nin in over a month almost* and that i dont think its the "only" way to tank but i recognize that its the safest and list wipe prone way to tank alot of content outside of abyssea

i mean the difference between a pld tanking and a monk/war "tanking" are very very diffrent things , much so along the lines of how nin/drk used to tank or brds or rdms at one point tanked. the way war and monk tank now is completely different you tank by generating more enmity through dps then your losing through taking damage , were as almost all other tanks tanked through reducing or nullifying the damage they were taking and keeping there hate steady with out a huge dps.

you're just adding words. WE ARE TELLING YOU WANT A TANK IS. Not an "efficient tank" not the "best tank" but that to tank you need to do just that. And if someone as mnk/war is doing that, then they are a tank. Who gives a fucking bullcrap how they achieve those two steps, if they're doing it, then they're tanking.
