As fondly as I think of the "adventure" of Teleport-Yhoating and taking the 45 minute trip into the Den of Rancor just so I could find out that half my party were minimally conscious mouthbreathers, two of which immediately had to leave despite insisting upon the camp, I don't miss it at all. I think that many of us have fond memories of xping just because it took up so much of our time and forced us to interact with strangers, some of whom became friends. I see no reason to believe the same thing wouldn't have happened in any other "event," if there had been any pre-75 events worth doing for the first...... wait, there still aren't any pre-75 events worth doing.
Experience Points parties served as substitutes for pre-75 content, and SE got away with it because they really do have a pretty badass job/battle system (and they were fortunate that we're all retarded enough to stick with it.) I mean, all I did apart from xp was quest (seriously no point), do low rank missions (lol?), and do the occasional BCNM40 (omg, Erase is worth 50 stacks of mithkabobs). I built alliances just to help me do quests back in the day. Heck, I think I was about a level 50 Black Mage when I made an alliance of 60-75 players to help me farm Shoalweed for the SOB questline.
Yeah, xping could be fun. But more often than not it was a battle against the suicidal and/or afk-y tendencies of one or more party members that took 30 minutes to set up and an hour to get rolling, only to be frozen solid a few hours later when one of the members has to go because *shocker* they can't afford to spend five consecutive hours playing a video game or *double shocker* they get bored killing the same monster over and over for 4 hours.
PS. Gyms of Valor was a dumb idea. Instead of divorcing Skilling up from leveling, it would make much more sense and be less of a burden to the player base if skillup rate was proportional to xp gained such that you skill up your skills to cap at the same rate you level at. Making it a separate event is extra work that doesn't need to be done for the same effect.
