As for Olor, he's indeed a new player who seems fairly nice and normal. And as far as forum gear guides go, the majority of them are definitely out of date. I ran into this problem while researching RDM gear, but it's nothing a little extra research and gear searches on FFXIAH couldn't overcome. I like that he's at least asking questions and demonstrating an interest in gearing properly instead of throwing on full Teal/Aurore/Perle and calling it a day.

EDIT: I mean that jokingly as a 'spoiler for sanity' thing instead of a NSFW thing, but hey, it works either way. I wouldn't want someone to wander by, ask why I audibly gasped, and then look at ... that. heh

As for the gearing thing, some forums are pretty hard to sift through to find useful information. I know that if you read about half of one of our RQTs, you won't find more than a few things relevant to what you actually need. Some forums have decent stickies but are outdated. And some forums have more wrong info than right. So I can't say I'd be honestly surprised if this is a new player who's having a bit of trouble sifting through information. I bet if I were to search for one good post that outlines "this is what you wear to TP" and "this is what you wear to WS" as a general rule, I'd be unsuccessful. I don't find it that hard to believe that a new player is having trouble finding information.

If he's not new and he's just retarded (I mean dude, if you can't find it, ask, obviously) then well, hope is lost.

Also gonna tack on that so many sites have so much math to sift through that it gets cumbersome to read it all. I don't get off on math, I understood what to wear and when back when I played, but but I didn't know the numbers behind it all that well. And a new player? Would have absolutely no clue what's going on with all those modifiers and qualifiers and whatever in the fuck else. I can see where looking for information and stumbling upon a bunch of calculations and formulas might do more harm than good for a brand new player.

Alla's job forums, despite their reputation, are actually a really solid starting point fora new player. Even if there's incorrect info in them, the stickies provide plenty of basic guidelines like "TP in haste and accuracy", "WS in STR gear", "INT for black magic, MND for white magic". Anyone who has actually spent *any* time looking through some FFXI forums will find these basic guidelines.

Also, Olor is a regular poster on Alla, but I'm not sure which job forums she frequents. I know she posts in /k/ (essentially the secret off-topic random BS awesomeness forum--rog was a major poster there till he got bant) and General 'cause those are where I usually post as well.
