Oh, ok. Good to know.
I remember starting off here (after all, it wasn't that long ago!). I'm still not one of the "best" players, but I've found my own niche here, and I've really learned a lot from this forum. I was one of those people who lurked for a while and was too intimidated to post here; even starting out with an account I know I started to type up a post, thought the better of it, then went back to lurking. But once you've started posting here, it's really not as bad as it seems from the outside. Sure there are people who are gonna tease and mess with you, but that's all part of the community. In fact, I find myself amused when I get caught in a woosh, and though it's annoying to be called out now and again, it's also a good learning experience because I often see things I shouldn't do, and that's improved me a good deal overall.
Honestly, while I can see where BG got its reputation, I think that if people would give it a chance, most of them would see it's not that bad. I personally haven't posted much in RQT, but I browse it often enough that I've found some good answers to a lot of questions someone asked before me, and again, improvement. Even random lurkers would benefit a good deal if they read and/or asked their questions there. All it takes is the ability to take a little ridicule (especially since most of it isn't really that bad...) and the openmindedness to learn. >.>
Anywho, back on topic... it's sorta amusing to see the sorta stuff cropping up now that the job directions thing has gone up. Everyone's in ragefits about RDM being Enfeeble/Enhance, SMNs are mad at their new avatars (I seem to see a lot of "give me Bahamut/Phoenix!"), BSTs aren't really getting much of note, and the THFs... well, it's the same THF hissyfits as usual. I can't wait to see how the rest of this unfolds. xD
Goddamn, all the articulate people came out of the woodwork! I love it. Hearing peoples' experience/reflections on BG culture and its reputation is really interesting. Makes me want to do my next fancy BG-Blog thingy on the subject, like "HOW A LURKER BECAME AN ADMIN, AND WHY I'M SO GREAT".
And Kensagaku, our own thread on the subject has a couple ragefits, though evidently with a bit more punctuation.
Since I was away, what exactly was said in the thread? just curious what some people said![]()
I'm a writer, I can't help it. If it's not seven lines or more it's not a paragraph damnit. DX
Also, I didn't see that thread! Need to make some popcorn first though. I love ragefits. And you can just call me Ken, Isla. Much easier than typing it out. ;3
Speaking of which when i began lurking here i was wearing Denali bonnet ;D!
My how times have changed.
When I started Lurking I was one of those "It's cool if I full time all my gear. I'm too lazy to constantly swap for everything" and now I blink 3 times every time I fire an Arrow or use a BP.
I don't even remember when I started here. I think once I started doing real endgame stuff (for the time) like kings/sea/etc. I kept quiet for the most part at first, from what I remember. The past year or so is when I finally started being talkative, and Media+SE announcements are definitely my main 2 threads
I was here when i was in Keston's ls in 2007, and was so terrified of posting because i was afraid i would get ripped a new asshole.
I first started posting back when I was in ParadiseOblivion and they told me about the big kills list, but it was maybe like once a month (I dont generally have a lot to say) After BG forums servers died or got hacked or whatever and they had to remake their forums or whatever I lost my old account and had to make this one, which I only did the day PO broke to lol in the thread about it. And even now I still just mainly lurk, and don't care what other people think of me. I also welcome confrontation until I get tired then I stop caring lol. I also try my best to speak clearly and in plain words, because I think its best to not try and mix words or try to sugar coat your words, because it devalues the meaning behind them.
I came here for Salvage information and stayed for cuddles afterwards.
In those days, Alla was a flaming mass of people shouting about how ridiculously awesome Salvage gear was and how totally unimaginably impossible the event was. Aurik, Appie, etc. over here were getting shit done.
Official Forums III: Auto-Fellatio
I came here cause people were always posting interesting information from BG onto other forums, and I wanted it straight from the source.
This thread is the only one I've ever read that isn't in advanced.
I began lurking on BG back in '06 after a friend showed me some of the EPIC BG VIDEOS (TRADEMARK), but it took me a couple of years to actually make an account and start posting. Even then I'm normally a pretty quite guy and don't post unless I can really contribute to a subject.
The BG SUPER ELITEST REPUTATION (ALSO TRADEMARK) never really scared me because I wanted to be a a player that actually knew what he was doing and didn't have to fall back on the "well it's my $12.95" sort of excuse as to why I suck. I'm lucky that I have a job where I can keep an eye on BG during the day and constantly read up on new information.
I make one small contradiction(according to them) and they jump all over it and act proud of themselves -___-;
I wish people would stop posting speculation as fact. I'm gonna flip my shit if someone else posts declaratively that SCH is getting comet.
Lurked for a long time before making an account, but basically was at GameFAQs with Ryko and thoseguys and trolling Alla and KI like a pro.
from our favorite rdm thread.
Wow had to skip forward, couldn't stomach anymore of the BG trolls. Seriously, they had some dude dual boxing a RDM vs himself as a naked Mnk, the entire BG parse was rigged from the beginning.
I happened to ~be~ one of the people doing those parses, and that "80%" number isn't full time DDing, it's DDing + Dia III spam + haste 1 person (other then yourself) + refresh 1 healer + cure IV bombing whenever possible. If I was able to full time focus then I could reach 90% or in some cases beat then. I attribute this more to the fact that I'm a hyperactive and borderline AHDH when doing combat in FFXI. Still if I can get 80% of BB / Full Usukukane monks, monks that I knew really well and were in the top 5% of the gaming populating, then it's definitely possible for other RDM's to perform as an adequate DD that has utility.
As for the entire "why take 80% when you can have 100%", it's a trap. The argument actually has no meaning because it preemptively subtracts from the RDM and limits them to "80%" while ignoring what they gain. In effect it's saying a RDM without MP, without Dia, without Cure IV, sleeps, are all only "80%" and that the other nameless DD is given all it's options / ability's at 100%. RDM's sacrifice damage potential for utility. Back in the day's of "6-man" groups I would do,
DD (/WAR or /SAM)
DD (/WAR or /SAM)
DD (/WAR or /SAM)
RDM/NIN (me)
BRD/NIN (puller / buffer)
WHM (healer)
RDM doesn't replacing a DD, and thus the entire nonsense (80% vs 100%) bull sh!t. It was replacing the BRD/WHM otherwise known as the "lazy BRD". Dia III would provide similar to if not more then the attack bonus of the BRD songs, Refresh would supplant their refresh songs, Cure IV would be better then any curing they put out, and melee damage would be the icing on the cake. If mobs needed crowd control then the RDM could Sleep I / II / Bind / Gravity the mobs. The only two jobs that could possibly give a better deal is a DNC or COR, and then it's boiling down to how good each build was and how good the player was. The entire point was that each member had assigned roles and responsibility's.
Of course that's all level 75, nowadays there is absolutely no reason to argue this anymore. SE designed the game post 75 to not restrict people to only a few "best" jobs. Everyone can contribute something and there are multiple ways to accomplish every goal. It's us the player base who is somehow punishing each other and messing things up. There are times when I think this game is too complex for it's player-base, it seems more and more people want just three to four actual "jobs" instead of a diverse selection.
