My limited testing in Abyssea Kons (prepatch) showed that abyssites did not increase frequency but have a random chance to increase potency and all of them can proc independently. So if you had all three azure abyssites, you could get a TE from the first box in any zone, but you'd have to be very lucky (all 3 proc + actually get a TE.) Dominion can influence potency and frequency in heroes zones and seems to always be active, although I think that the frequency bonus is applied to pearl because you still get super low amber box occurrences without building amber light.

this would definitely explain why you can have 2 boxes, one give you 500xp and the other give you 1250...

My testing also implied that you can roll in some kind of range surrounding your current potency level (maybe above/below or something, not really sure.) I think that the best way to start getting a really good idea on how lights work would be to find at which points you will no longer observe certain box tiers.

    Code:
    			Azure Ruby
Tier Cruor Exp Time	Restore Temp	Amber	Azure	Ruby	Pearl	Silver	Gold	Ebon
    I Miniscule(200) Tiny Bit(250) -	Feeble(HP) ?	Faint	Faint	Faint	Faint	-	-	-
    II Small(400) Little(500) -	Mild(HP) ?	Mild	Mild	Mild	Mild	-	-	-
III Moderate(600) Some(750) -	Faint(HP) ?	Strong	Strong	Strong	Strong	Mild	Mild	Mild
    IV Considerable(800)	Considerable(1000)	-	Strong(???) ?
    V Princely(1000) Tremendous(1250)	10	Intense(HP/MP/2h)	Laden
This is some incomplete and probably somewhat inaccurate model of box strengths. I will say that there does seem to be five tiers. The reason I say inaccurate is because I was not completely sure on the exact tier order. I had some seriously weird shit occurring like considerable cruor boxes appearing in much greater quantity than moderate until I raised my azure light past a certain point, then the trend was reversed (implying that maybe tier IV occurs before tier III.)

Also, I think that I first observed tier V when I either had 80 or 88 azure, although I believe I did have one of the azure abyssites at the time. I do remember getting azure up to 112 and I would still encounter non tier V boxes.

So I've heard that you can only get good dark rings from level 5 gold boxes, but I haven't seen a lot of evidence to support this. What I do know is that you get quite a few more dark rings when your amber light is around level 4 (much more often and frequently 2 per box.) I'm going to keep my lights at level 4~ amber (whatever that turns out to be) while farming the remainder of my fistules and see if I can get a good ring from them.

It would be most beneficial if we were able to determine that good augments either: a. came at a certain level of amber, or alternatively b. determined that augments are random, but things like rings and hairpins drop from highlands drop best at a certain amber value.

Although pre lights change, it seemed to be the consensus that capped amber helped with KI, killing your item ratio. Along those lines, something in the 80-120 lights range for Dark Rings and Hairpins seems to be in line.

I've only ever seen 1 Dark Ring drop out of the 6-8 hours I've soloed them at 120 min increments each. I'd usually just kill Emphs/V1 with Amber kills till I saw Large gold chests drop and assumed that was 'cap'. There has to be a sweet spot where you can still get top tier small gold chests but still have an 75-80%+ chance of a gold chest dropping from kill. I usually either get 95% LARGE Gold chest drop from capped lights or like a 30-40% chance of a small gold chest from somewhere between 0 and capped gold.

Feeble - I know for a fact gives full HP cure.
Mild-???(maybe removes ailments along with cure?)
    Faint- ???
Strong- I know for a fact gives full HP cure and +300% TP
    Intense(300%,HP,MP,2hr)

Kukulkan gave me approx 120 azure lights.

this makes me feel kinda bad for ruby lighting Ouzelum for Kensagaku... sorta. not really.

does this mean that killing nm's is vastly superior to killing ephs for azure? or perhaps the tier/level of nm changes the amount of lights it gives.

also my theory, uneducated, on ebon was that it increased the quality of all chest contents but not the frequency. it just made sense to me one night, but now i dont understand at all!

It definitely depends on the level/tier of the NM. An Ephemeral Clionid gave me 128 lights in La Thiene, so it's a thing. Other NMs/Ephemeral have given me only 16, so it definitely varies.

Also from very anecdotal and nowhere near scientific evidence, it would appear that certain Ephemerals favour certain lights, and as such I would not be surprised if NMs worked the same way. (Since both give bonus lights.) I had another Ephemeral Clionid give me 128 azure lights, while an Ephemeral Clionid checking the same level gave me 10 pearlescent lights.

I'd say it has nothing to do with level, it seems like it's just a table of values the game pulls from that's different for each mob.

I'd have to agree more with this, the Tonberry Occultists were giving 32 lights per...

Still interested in this thread, and will update the OP a little, just been busy.

Any other ideas or testing on wtf Ebon does?
I think it might be "Treasure Hunter" or "Superior Casket Rewards" ala Dominion Ops/Bastion modifiers, but idk how to even test that....

I'll mess with some ebon at some point, but having like 70 of it or whatever and uncapped ruby didn't cap my ruby boxes. I think it probably has something to do with either EXP/cruor cap or EXP/cruor increase between mobs. It can be tested with two characters somewhat easily. Cap ruby/pearl on one character, then start fighting mobs that won't give you any lights based on however you're killing them while someone else with 0 lights joins your party. Open a bunch of ebon boxes => capped ebon light and nothing else.

I don't know if it's been said but in Heroes, chest quality caps a lot lower (50 or so gives you "max" azure), but frequency still goes off the max available light.

Yaguarigyu was giving 1 ebon per kill in addition to the azure we were getting per kill. idk if this will help any calculations just wanted to get this info out there. not sure on the amount of azure we were getting from him because we had someone killing for black tiger hides while popping the NM but we definitely were getting ebon from him because it went up once each kill and we were not getting any ruby boxes to get ebon from. edit: that ones one ebon light per kill.

Well, I figured out one function of Ebon lights. I went to Tahronghi and started to kill VNMs in hopes for another Usurper pop. I was only killing T2s so it was the same mob I was killing each time and I was trying not to ruby because I was going to gold box farm later. First kill gave me 5 pearl and 1 ebon. Second kill gave me 10 more pearl and 1 more ebon. Third kill gave me 15 more pearl and 1 more ebon. It would seem as if ebon is a multiplier for pearl lights. I did not have the same results when checking to see if it also multiplied amber, azure, and ruby.
