Also, I think that I first observed tier V when I either had 80 or 88 azure, although I believe I did have one of the azure abyssites at the time. I do remember getting azure up to 112 and I would still encounter non tier V boxes.

128 seems to be the magic number for azure top tier boxes. Also, the farther you get over 128 just means you are raising the likeliness that you will see more blue chests. Gold box farmers rejoice. Capping amber at 255 and azure at 128 means you definitely do get more gold chests than others while still staying positive on time, with my sample size being about 18 hours of cataclysm farming.

Well, I figured out one function of Ebon lights. I went to Tahronghi and started to kill VNMs in hopes for another Usurper pop. I was only killing T2s so it was the same mob I was killing each time and I was trying not to ruby because I was going to gold box farm later. First kill gave me 5 pearl and 1 ebon. Second kill gave me 10 more pearl and 1 more ebon. Third kill gave me 15 more pearl and 1 more ebon. It would seem as if ebon is a multiplier for pearl lights. I did not have the same results when checking to see if it also multiplied amber, azure, and ruby.

Or you were getting more peal because you were leveling up the mob. The last time I was killing mobs in a zone to build pearl I had a friend doing NMs to build our azure light, so he was also getting ebon. Neither one of us were seeing what you claim.

It would be impossible to level up a T2 VNM, I believe, since it's a notorious monster.

It's possible that maybe it only multiplies lights dropped by mobs that give ebon in the first place then? I have no idea, but I have no other explanation why the kills would drop more and more pearl lights.

About a week ago I helped a friend who just came back to the game get her Celerity abyssite from tonberrys, along the way we cap azure and pearl without any nm kills(0 ebon). After that we capped amber and proceeded to farm boxes for about 3 hours. In that entire time we had 0 boxes with 2 augmented items.

Could it be possible ebon has to be a certain level to get 2 augmented items in a gold box? Or were we just unlucky?

I've been getting various pearl returns (10-15) from t1 vnms (in Tahrongi if it matters). Also Bhumi seems to give enhanced amber; One night I got 64 amber from a cata killshot, the other night he gave 128 amber (!!) from one killshot. However I've only ever received 5 pearl off him, less than even normal nm enhancement.

Yeah, used to always look for Bhumis when my group was farming boxes for shells/buds. This was in the 2 weeks before lights were quantifiable but we were always getting top-tier chests off 2/3 Bhumis.

Something else that might be interesting to test/related. When people get their OMGAWESOMESAUCE Dark Rings, or refresh hairpins, what is their ebon at? Maybe ebon controls the quality of augments?

Assuming they didn't change the mechanisms of light gain in the last patch, all of the awesome augmented Dark Rings and Refresh pins I've ever seen have been with 0 Ebon, and I have been lucky by the standards of most people that farm Konschtat.

You didn't kill any VNMs for pearl lights?

Do Tier 1 VNMs give Ebon? I know that I did when I got my first good ring. I'm pretty sure that I didn't when I got the Refresh pin (but all the other gold chest items were shit). My second good ring . . . I think about my only capped light was Amber, but I can't swear that I got killshot on the one that produced that chest.

I never got to pop a T1 VNM when I last messed around with it, but I have yet to see any NM not give +1 Ebon.

Just tested Pavan in kon, gave 128 amber. I'm willing to bet all the avatar nms give x8-x16 (64-128 ) enhanced amber.

Akash gave 32. One interesting note though. I fought a VT Emph Murex that gave constant 64 Azure. However, that same Emph gave 16 Amber when I tested Sanguine Blade initially. When I did another Amber kill, the Emph gave 32. The next kill was with melee hits (No light). The kill after that was Amber, but only gave 16 lights.

My akash only gave 8 amber lights, though it was with sanguine blade, which kept doing only 68 damage. >.< guess akash resists dark heavily, since i was doing 1.4k to everything else.

And yeah, the emph clionids near akash gave me lots of azure, both I killed gave 128, but only 5 pearl. I think they gave 16 or 32 amber though.

Yeah got 144 amber off jala last couple days...at least i'm pretty sure it was at 0 before kill. Two kills capped both times anyway

Those posting these varying results of amber lights from avatar kills should also post how many Ebon lights they had. I think they are the reason for the varying light counts per kill.

Edit: In other words, I'm certain that Ebon lights act as a multiplier for lights granted from NM kills (not normal mobs). This explains my observation of increasing number of pearl from killing the T2 VNM over and over again, the variation of lights granted from killing Jala/Akash/Bhumi, and why killing NMs with a physical WS sometimes gives 16 ruby or 64 or 128 as experienced by many in this thread.

I got 128 amber off Pavan the other night and I had at most 1 ebon. I'll do more testing on this when I get home if I remember, but I'm not sure about it being a multiplier unless 1 ebon has a huge effect.

1 Emph Murex gave 128 Azure (1 Ebon at the time). I doubt it's the Ebon.
