Good advice, thanks - will make sure to follow it and take a BLM along.

    I really miss Final Fantasy XI pre-WotG. WotG wasn't bad or anything, but I loved the atmosphere. It's where I thrived and it was good. And now it is different, and I am struggling to reconcile with the vast changes to the game I love. I could have swallowed quite a bit of them, but the hardest hit was the level rap being raised. That is an important aspect of what defined FFXI for me, they didn't need to raise the level cap to keep people interested. They had a strong story and reasonable requirements to get the good shit out of the game. And even then, you wouldn't have missed anything if you never camped a ground king for hours on end. And now this? I can get Lvl. 95 in less than 24 hours. It's diluted the game for me, which is fine. I mean, it really is okay. The game is aging and I guess they just had to provide incentives for the mole people to come out of their WoW caves to upgrade their relics & such to the higher level iterations of them. Kinda saddening to me though, but that's okay. ._.;

so you'd prefer endless level grinding instead? LFG for hours (if not days)? i didn't start playing regularly (i.e. every day) until after level 45 or so, but after that it still took me 4 months to hit 75 cap (i was lvl 70 when ToAU came out). i have zero interest in sitting looking at my mog spinning in circles for days on end because of lack of healer/buffer/otherdd/whatever. if folks don't like the abyssea burn, you don't have to do it. for those with the rose colored glasses of the old days, i suggest you get a group of 6 and go level off the new lvl 100+ mobs without GoV page xp buffs and see how long you can keep it up before you want to stab someone in the face. me, i like my xp nice and fast, i have enough other things to do without adding endless weeks/months of xp grinding to cap level (again).

i'll certainly agree most of the game is /easymode but i'll take it in its current state instead of gear cockblocking botting faggotry and 'haha, no drop for you' sea bullshit.

    edited for spelling.

I came back yesterday and now I'm on Ragnarok. All these changes are new and frightening to me.

    Indeed.

Gotta say, coming back to Abyssea after having quit a little over halfway through ToAU is an almost intimidating experience. It's seriously like a whole new game.

I absolutely love that most shit is lowmannable now, though. Lets me do most stuff with just a few close friends.

In the same boat. Came back a week ago. Got MNK from 18->95 (instead of my RDM) because I had BB items and always wanted that. Still, procs/atmas/AF3/wtf-i'm-in-pink-gear is weird to get used to.

I stopped when level cap went to 80. Getting minorly bored with WoW and a potential mass quit fest due to Diablo 3.

I had maybe 2000 Kindred Seals before stopping.

Is it possible to make good money out of them? I know they can be used to purchase HNM pops but am I right to assume people grew out of them?

    EDIT:

BST can solo 99% of things in Abyssea for +1s and +2s, but you really need to grab a BLM friend for !! procs to make seal farming feasable, otherwise it is going to take you many many more kills than neccessary.
I like the thought of that! Due to being in EU timezone it's a bit harder to find groups and stay long term because I need to leave early. If I can get most of my loots with just BST and a pet this sounds really appealing!!!

    EDIT2:

I was looking at the Twilight Helm and Body which gives Auto-RR3.

How does it work? I was hoping if I had both on FULL TIME I will have perma-RR3 so I can do random shit indefinitely and not worry too much about delevelling? Or is there a cooldown

    * Depending on your patience level, you can easily get 1.5~2.5mil per KS99 orb. It's going to depend heavily on the price of Honey Wine on your server, so check that out.
    * There's no cooldown. It's infinite RR3s as long as you're wearing both pieces.

Thanks Byrthnoth!!! I'mma so "buying" that (Unless a BST can solo it at 95? lol. I assume "brew" is involved). I can explore Abyssea and/or do whatever else stupid thing with minimal consequences!!!

I guess I can macro it in pre-death too!

Thanks, just looked up Honey Wine and saw its purpose. Will keep that in mind.

I only came back a few months ago from a 7 year break but can answer some of your questions.

Having 2000 Kindred Seals could make you quite a bit of money. Just as an example, I recently did a Horns of War KS99 run. Assuming you win, the rare item Beastly Shank is a guaranteed drop used to spawn normal Behemoth, who has chance to drop the item to spawn King Behemoth. I sold my Beastly Shank within 2 days in my Bazaar for 1.4 mil gil, and I believe the Beastly Shank is one of the cheaper of the 3 KS99 pop items. Some of the abjuration gear can still be top-quality when augmented via Synergy. This requires tatters or scraps, which are created from the abjurations/seals themselves. Black belt is still best-in-slot for monk as well, so there is still plenty of demand for these HNMs.

As stated, there are quite a few classes that can solo Abyssea NMs for AF3+1 gear, but it is a lot slower solo than going with a small group that can proc !! weaknesses. For example, when I kill NMs solo as NIN/DNC I'll typically get 1-2 AF3 seals (sometimes 0), but if I go with two of my friends as THF/NIN, WHM/RDM, and BLM/BRD we have 6/7 yellow !! procs covered as well as TH and typically get 3-4 seals per kill. NMs drop seals for 4 different classes and it takes 8 to make a piece of +1 gear, 10 for +1 body, so you can see how this makes a difference in terms of kills needed to complete a piece. So you most certainly can get a lot of your gear solo on various classes, but it will take noticeably longer.

As for Twilight Helm and Body, I do not personally have them, but I do not believe they have a cooldown on Auto-RR3. Also, you don't even have to full-time the gear to get the effect. If you know you're going to die, you can hit a macro or something to swap them on and have RR3 when you die (at least, from what I've heard). I should also mention that inside Abyssea there's a good chance you'll have Auto-RR3 anyways by the time you can get Twilight Helm and Body due to buffs you can get inside called Atmas. They're KIs you collect and can choose up to 3 of them to "infuse" at a time while inside Abyssea. One of them has Auto-RR3 (as well ast 15% Triple Attack and 10% Quick Magic) and it is from the same guy as Twilight Helm and Body, Shinryu. That said, the Twilight gear works outside Aby while Atmas do not.

EDIT: Apparently I am too slow.

Anyone can solo Shinryu with a brew, though like many things Abyssea related (or otherwise), procs are also important, so solo may not be the best idea. I mean, you can try, but chances of you burning a hell of a lot more cruor than if you arranged for a blue !! every kill is likely.

You'll need to work towards getting to the point you can fight Shinryu in the first place, and likely will want others for the first kill to ensure you get the Atma from him (which has Auto-Reraise on it anyway). The quest reward for beating him is an Abyssite that drops brew cost from 2mil to 200k cruor, so you definitely want to do that before buying brews.

Just to put it out there, @90 Bst could trio Horns of War, not that it's an incredible feet, but it's an option. Flowerpot Merle bosses up on Behemoth. You definitely can make some dough on your seals. Or come to siren and donate them to getting me an egg :D

If any kind soul could spare some quick advice it would be much appreciated

I haven't played since ~feb 2010, but I think i am going to come bk in dec, so before I start bk up I've been reading up on some of the updates, and I have a few questions
My char has 75 pld nin war rng brd smn (smn is beyond gimp since it was smn burnt) they were are decently well geared when i quit, so which of these would be easier for me to get to 95 w/o gimping it up to badly?
iirc i had these to my name bk in the day:
    ~2 mil gil
full sky god set, dusk hands, o.kotes, af+1 (nin body & feet, pld body, feet, rng hands, brd pants and hands), brutal, loq, and other earring with sing skill and eva, usukane hands, feet, legs, ares hand and feet, wyrmal legs, marduk hands, sha'ir manteel, ministrel's (i had a rly nice march build bk then T_T), perdu weapons, the nyzul ws, haub, bomblet(sp, ammo slot), other assorted items for eva and enmity sets for pld and nin, mostly all sea gorgets and some of the torques, pcc charm, walmart turban, goliard hat, body and hands, askar body and feet, almost full dyna for each of my jobs, oh and not to forget the almighty joyeuse. (might b forgetting stuff >.<')

anyways... what can i do with this? or better yet if you had this what would you take to 95 first to help the other jobs?
and thnx in advance for reading/replying

Leveling any of the jobs will be easy, but gearing up depends on how OCD you are about top quality gear. Farming seals and items for AF is pretty easy with a few exceptions. The exceptions are mobs that are heavily camped for key items for empy weapon NMs.

If I were you my first job would probably be ninja because a lot of stuff is easy to solo or can be duo'd if you find a healing partner. The other alternative would be warrior. They have the most access to getting procs for items, seals and atma in abyssea so I'd go that route if you can find a good LS or even just a few friends to help out. Requires having your skills high enough to use the required WS though.

    Hey all,

I'm coming back after not playing seriously in years and I'm curious how the game plays these days. What I mean by this is leveling used to be such a huge part of the game and it seems like they've trivialized that a bit now. So the question I have is what has filled the void?

Despite their rapid increase in level cap have they managed to fill the gap with content? Is there still plenty to do? Can you still find groups, etc to do older content?

What does a typical play session in FFXI look like these days?

I'm having trouble wrapping my head around an FFXI where it is easy to level! Help me out here
