New or Returning Players Discussion (Or Anything Old FFXI Then Vs. Now)

I'm new to the game; my fiance talked me into it, and I've been enjoying playing it -- only he's much too high level to want to follow me around while I level. I'm only level 12 Monk at the moment, though I eventually want to switch to white mage once I can move monk to a subjob. But anyway, it's a little lonely just leveling on my own. Anyone on sylph with a low level character?

The first thing to focus on though would be getting good Atmas, Abyssites, etc. Past that, unlike a lot of old content, Abyssea is mostly dependent on your possible playtime and focus. Make sure you secure relevant procs as much as possible and most of the time you should be able to walk out with what you went in to get.

This is great advice. I got back three months ago and at first joined an events LS. Three weeks later, I had helped them get Emp weapons, Zelus Tiaras etc as the LS BRD, but had absolutely nothing to show for it myself. So I quit, joined a social LS, and started soloing stuff on my BST, one item at a time. By now, my BST and BRD are pretty well geared, and WHM is on the way. I still help folks out, but now am much more focused. When you first get back it's important to make sure you sort out the basics before you get distracted by all sorts of other stuff.

Pretty epically geared SMN and DRG back at level 75... B staff, full Ares, ridiculous spellcasts, etc, etc. I'm sure none of that matters anymore though.

The biggest concern that I have was just the level of job prejudice and balance that went on regarding all events, XP, HNM, anything! Are DRG and SMN needed anymore, or am I going to just be sitting around Jeuno/Whitegate?

DRG suck (unless you have Gungir or Ryunohige), however SMN is extremely useful. Voidwatch, WoE, and other misc. things, SMN is necessary and effective. You're going to have to get a bunch of new SMN gear to be up to date, but other than that it shouldn't take too long.

And for subjobs for SMN, I used to always go /SCH, and use a Dark Magic set for Aspir/Drain, then I was planning on using the storm spells to get the AF head bonuses. Has /RDM just completely replaced /SCH as a RDM sub? Or has something else stepped up?

Or perhaps, SMN melee is viable with /SAM? I was pretty close to a Nirvana.

Voidwatch: I always sub either SCH or WHM, depending on what is needed. You won't really need dark magic, but all the helix spells are now 'procs' in Voidwatch. Storms are still good, but in Voidwatch, almost useless due to the temp items/atmacites you get.

WoE: SCH sub; Sublimation/storms/stratagems

Melee SMN is stupid.

Red Mage sub is my personal preference for Summoner. You get Refresh and Convert, not that you will really need Convert very often. With the Caller's Attire Set +2 and a solid perp staff, your Avatars will either be free or give you MP back. With Caller's +2 set and Nirvana to a decent level, your elemental spirits will be free or give you MP back. (Not that you will ever use them other than to show off.)

Melee SMN is never viable.

Melee SMN would be viable for solo and old event nonsense, that's about it. The new staff ws doesn't do awful dmg, so you could have some fun dicking around in abyssea with it.

Yea you have to pay with Crysta, and its not hard. I did see a bunch of people complaining about it, but I didn't have any issues, and I believe they added more options to pay.

Is Character Reactivation Service still offered in some form? Through the website it has been 'under maintenance' for the last several days and I won't return if I have to start over.

Whee I got square to take my credit card, they really hate taking my money I guess.

Diomedes did you delete your character? If not, all I had to do was link my Squeenix and POL accounts then reactivate then figure out how to get them to take my credit card and I was good to go. Just got it done like 5 min ago.

My friend and I are coming back to the game after a ~2 year break and have a lot of questions about appropriate gear sets, atma set ups, ect. I don’t necessarily mean specific stuff like Berserk up/down sets, just the essential sets we need to get started on the following jobs.

What are the standard gear sets, necessary atma set ups and necessary subjobs for:
WHM, BLM/BRD, BLU, WAR, NIN, THF and MNK
