Never saw the opening to this game and oh god I came buckets the whole 1st hour. Anyways the tutorial mission is rough coming to terms with PSP camera/controls and the absolute worst motion blur i've ever seen in a game. The first real mission though where you can run around the map a bit and pick your characters is immensely better, they weren't shitting when they said this game had fun gameplay.
I put in a few hours on the PSP version and the camera didnt bother me, after about 30min on the PS4 the camera jumping gave me motion sickness. It's really fucking bad. Sucks cause everything else seems fantastic
Got about 10 hours into this game. Its fun. I'm enjoying the combat and ability, equipment, and magic systems. Only real gripe is the awful too fast camera. It makes me nauseas.
For those that are playing this version/beat the PSP version that was released on the web some time ago, how useful/recommended is it to complete the expert missions between the story missions?
I ask because when I played the PSP version, I pretty much talked to everyone, did all the lessons, traveled around and explored all the towns but never did the expert missions because they were always way higher level then my characters were.
Pretty useful, you get access to certain towns/events/items that you would not otherwise get. Also, even if they are too high for you... you can usually use scummy tactics to get through them with ace or try or something. Ranged attacks pwn those missions when spaced well.
Camera pisses me off and it's kind of overwhelming that you get 14 characters off the bat and there's no restriction on how many of them you can even have on reserve for missions... otherwise the battle system is a lot of fun so that still has got me playing.
Is it just me though or does the story make no sense whatsoever other than the whole main arc of war etc etc.
Eh, I was able to follow it pretty closely, but then again I only got to chapter 4 from before and have barely gotten into the HD version.
It is nice having so many unique fighting styles though. When the PSP version came out, everyone who played it on here seemed to have different mains they enjoyed playing more lol. Lots of fans of Eight, Ace, King, Rem. I was a fan of using King+Jack myself, and discovering how useful players like Deuce and Queen and etc are was always nice too.
I think by the time I got to chapter 4 in the PSP version, I had all 12 party members divided into 4 sets of parties that I enjoyed rolling at any given time lol
Queen is amazing. Best in battle, best waifu... just best.
Dash (or Speedrush in HD, I think) is one of the best moves in the game for hitting killsights and just overall mobility. I just slap that and a lightning spell on Queen and she's good to go. Her normals are also godlike, good pokes and the down + attack can be used as a dodge and it chains into its own projectile normals (in case you don't have any projectile moves set) and unlike certain characters (Rem) her best moves aren't ever just things easily replicated by item use.
She also has a special accessory that gives her a transformation of sorts... and its awesome.
Queen is great, Chari knows why. If you need short/mid-range dominance she's your girl. She also looks amazing while doing it.
King is strong and has decent mobility, firepower and great skills. He's an easy long-range character to use and whatever short-range stuff he has either buffs his long range game or just fucking destroys stuff. He also has a skill that prevents death for a while if you're into that (good for some SOS I guess?)
Ace is my personal favourite. Works in short range (with certain command normals or basic attacks) and mid-range, with slight long range abilities that come in the form of fucking lasers. He has some utility with card tricks but they aren't really strong enough to bother with but you could sustain yourself with them. His teleport/trap attacks (in conjunction with magic cancels) can make him lethal (though you do have to be careful not to teleport into attacks).
Eight is a short-range badass with a skill that completely breaks 99% of all fights. If you're having a hard time Phantom Rush can really save your shit and it's fun to dodge like 2-3 behemoths and punch them in the killsight. His other skills are a lot of fun too and he has a bunch of command normals and command specials. He also has a little talent with magic especially magic cancels with the backhand. A lot of variety there.
Rem has a lot of unique/strong skills and is really good with magic (seriously, those strategy maps can't handle her). She can give MP back to the entire party, allow for risk-free summoning and generally has the ability to never run out of MP. Couple that with whatever magic wrecks shit and you're good. She'll be invaluable in early-game but mid-late game you don't really need her. She's close range but her attacks are awkward as fuck so I mostly just used her for magic.
Deuce is a close-range hero but holy shit she's good. Equip the right magic and you can go to town on basically everything. Her abilities are useful, her command normals are powerful (she's great for leveling) and she's good with fire magic. Give her a BOMB spell and let shit burn. Just walk around enemies playing nice songs that murder things and she also isn't awful when AI play her. Add magic cancels to her attacks and you've got a winner.
Trey is a long range god that takes some getting used to but holy shit that power. His attacks require more timing than King (or Cater) but he can deal damage and has the skills for it. Also not bad with magic if you set a close-range/mid-range spell he becomes a bit of an all-rounder. Probably the only character I can use sniper with effectively...not that you ever really need to except for that 1 time.
The rest are decent but depend on play style and how much you're willing to put into them.
Cater is fun for mid/long-range but I never found her to be that strong. Her style is really fast and fluid so she's a blast to play and really hard to hit while dealing damage. You can definitely clean up weak enemies and even hit killsights for strong ones easily enough.
Sice has nice mobility with her attacks but that often leads to you getting hit unless you're careful. She gets stronger as she murders people but that goes when she gets hit so it's not very useful in situations where it should be. However, she has some gravity abilities that are pretty useful and great for murder if used in conjunction with different skills or magic. Not a bad choice.
Seven I found awkward as fuck, but she's an interesting character with the chain wipe TO ME TO YOU shit. She has a lot of control over mid-range and can easily get into close range with her abilities. She also has some elemental power so you don't really need magic for her and some abilities allow her to cover long range too. I think if you get used to her she can be really good, I just never really put in the time to figure stuff out.
Nine is a decent all-rounder. Jumps are kinda awkward to use but they're strong and generally keep you safe. His other skills allow for long-range attacks and some protection. However, I really like his command normals which make up for his awkward skill speeds. He's also pretty hard to kill so with decent equipment you can let the AI do shit.
Jack is powerful as fuck but sloooow. He gets skills later on that make him more mobile and a hell of a lot more dangerous (I mean...WAY more dangerous) but I think many will be turned off by his early play style how long it takes for him to get amazing. At the core Jack is a counter character, so if you're good with enemy attacks you'll destroy lives.
I have nothing to say about Machina, he isn't bad but I barely ever played him.
Cinque is also pretty strong but I think Chari knows more about her than I do. She's good at stunning enemies for break/kill sights but not great at exploiting them because holy fuck slow. AOE attacks and is actually good to let AI control her and stun the fuck out stuff.

And yes, magic canceling is a thing and a super effective way to cast level 3 magic without having to grind cast speed. It makes some characters into beasts but is pretty awkward to use/time at first.
The way Queen holds down her skirt after her attacks; It just makes you want to try and get panty-shots even more. How am I going to learn any of the other characters when I keep playing as her.
I feel so tossed around, but I'm only at chapter 2 so I guess that's normal.
I can't speak of the PSP vers., but I do have some opinions on the game thus far..
The amount of motion blur is physically sickening at times and is disorienting almost all of the time. Never noticed it in combat at all though.
Camera feels like it should've been reworked, it hurts sometimes how it just zooms around and seems to get stuck/shakey in some places.
Some parts of the game feel untouched period.. example being when you're on the balcony of the school. The ocean looks like a piece of paper.
All around, I feel like it could've been a bit better as an "HD/remaster" title, but I'm thankful to be playing it, nonetheless. It is a great game looking past the fact that it's a (in some places/ways!) shoddy port.
Yeah, it's not the control of the camera that is the issue, it's the speed/blur of it that is causing some motion sickness and makes it a bit hard to stomach at times. But yeah, free control of it with the right joystick
I still can't tell if I like this game or not. I think having all 12 or whatever it is characters right from the start is a bit overwhelming. Like I really enjoy the combat, but I feel like I have to keep everyone updated with equipment and such even though I probably don't. It's just a lot to do at once.
On the plus side I got some circlet from the Corsi Cave after a fun boss type fight and my magic went from like 50 -> 65. My blizzards went from 400 dmg to 1200.
Oh also, there's this.... level 99 in 30 minutes per character.
I'm actually thinking of upping the difficulty. ATM I am plowing through everything so easily because I'm taking my time and doing everything I can between missions.
That kind of hurts, knowing that there's a no effort way to max level, but alas, I'll skip it for now.

Honestly, for the first couple chapters you don't need to worry too much about keeping everyone leveled. Once you have more regions and more innately higher level mobs to fight (as in, not a result of those repeat battles), it gets pretty easy to keep everyone caught up level-wise.
As far as gear though? Yeah, that shit is kind of tedious. Finding good weapons for everyone is tough lol
