Honey and Clover is great if you are looking for comedy/romance/drama/coming of age. It's easily one of my favorite animes. Ano Hana (currently airing) is also very interesting if you like the genre
Pardon the necro, but I thought it better then starting a new topic and I've got basically the same question. Having not seen any anime for a couple years I'm looking for something to hopefully rekindle my interests in the medium.
Some people I pretend to respect had made a big deal of Attack on Titan but I found it rather lacking myself, so I figured I'd ask some strangers for suggestions instead.
To assist, please list five to ten anime you love.
Yowamushi Pedal! DO IT
I can tell you what I've enjoyed personally over the past few years of sparse anime-watching, in no particular order:
Bakemonogatari / Nisemonogatari / Monogatari season 2 (ongoing)
Sword Art Online
Log Horizon (ongoing)
Outbreak Company (ongoing)
Clannad
The World God Only Knows (Kami Nomi Zo Shiru Sekai; I recommend stopping after season 2)
Code Geass
Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha / A's / StrikerS (quality peaks at 2nd season for most people)
Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei
Gurren Lagann (overrated as hell though)
Persona 4 The Animation
And kind of ancient by today's standards (and if you've ever watched Toonami you've probably seen it), but I have major nostalgia goggles for Outlaw Star.
Ah right, didn't think that would have been all that useful for my case, since if you googled anime recommendations you'd get pretty much the same list. Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Code Geass (the first season at any rate), Death Note, Gurren Lagann; I never really liked anything that 5 million other people didn't like apparently.

Sword Art Online is probably a good start since we're on an MMO forum after all.
Based on this, it seems like the popular hits that lean towards the serious side with touches of comedy are the ones that might be best for your tastes.
Check out Steins;Gate. Starts kinda slow but picks up FAST a few episodes in and is awesome.
Gintama is primarily Comedy but every few bits has a dramatic story arc that kicks your ass, another personal fave.
Bakuman and Chihayafuru are both kind of out of left field as far as your tastes might go. Bakuman is a shonen anime about 2 guys who try to make it big drawing a manga for Jump. The series has already ended and the anime not only matches the manga ending, but gives a little extra, definitely good! And Chihayafuru is fucking amazing. On the surface it might turn you off, an anime about a bunch of kids playing a card game that doesn't even involve monsters or shit like some other shows. But it is seriously a fucking awesome show. There's a bit of a cult following on BG for it.
Eureka Seven (the first series, not the movie or second series) is really solid. It does touch heavily on the romantic side of things, but there's a lot of other plots and genres at play too. 50 episodes long, it's definitely up there as a fantastic anime.
Sakamichi no Apollon is another amazing anime. Not action oriented at all, it's basically music mixed with slice of life. But an actual GOOD anime that deals with realistic characters and emotions, not shit like some other music animes (....K-On). Beck is another music based anime worth looking into if you like the genre.
SPACE BROS! (Uchuu Kyoudai) Another awesome series. This one is about 2 brothers who as kids dreamed about being astronauts. As adults, the younger one is actually going to the moon, and the other starts the series kind of in a life crisis but ends up finding his way. The series is still going on, but they have like 60+ episodes already and it is yet another one of my favourite series.
I'd recommend things like AnoHana, Clannad, Hanasaku Iroha, etc, etc, etc, but those are mostly school life, romance, somewhat tragic themed animes. Dunno if you'd like those.
What else??? Sports! Hajime no Ippo, Diamond no Ace (just started, love it so far!), Major, etc, etc. Lots of pretty decent ones if you're into sports stuff.
Honestly, there's a TON of good anime out there if you're willing to look. I just listed some of my favourites and odds are I forgot about a few too. I also didn't mention any movies, which there are also a lot of (Hint: Summer Wars is fucking awesome)
As Vaspinne said, it is actually useful info.
There's no GitS in that list (or at least it didn't make top 5), so I wouldn't recommend Psycho-Pass for example.
Sure recommendations
Fate/Zero
Kill la Kill - For Gurren Lagann
Panty & Stocking - same
Longshot Recommendations
Mahou Shoujou Madoka Magica
Tiger & Bunny
Jormungand - Black Lagoon methadone
Mirai Nikki
EDIT:
Beyond that, I've gone and added the anime charts for 2000 to 2012 to my bucket (the ones for 2013 exceed BG's size limit), and you can have a look for periods you missed and decide what you want to see on your own.

you can get 2013 here http://neregate.com/blog/anime-charts/
2000 - 2008 have no blurbs, so you'll basically have to judge a book by it's cover, but 2009 and up do have some descriptions.
not really informative but should help a bit:(someone posted this vid in the other forum)
