Gather your friends in RIFT and play anywhere, any time

When the next major RIFT™ update hits early this summer, subscribers will be treated to a surprise – free character transfers. Trion Worlds announced today that with RIFT 1.3, players will have the ability to move to select servers in their territory once each week, taking all items, achievements, and titles with them. Additionally, guild leaders will be able to move their guild’s level and experience.

“MMOs are all about playing with your friends no matter which server they’re on, and that’s why we’re offering this as a free service to our subscribers,” said Scott Hartsman, Executive Producer. “RIFT is both a game and a service, and adding free server transfers is just one more way we can make this the best possible MMO experience available.”

Whether you want to play with friends, check out a new server, or avoid queue times on highly populated servers, you’ll be free to move about Telara. As a part of this grand experiment, there will initially be no limits on the number of times you can transfer your characters or guild.

Character transfers will remain a free service for the foreseeable future, and could become a permanent addition to the RIFT experience. Subscribers will be able to perform the transfers inside of the game itself once the patch is live.

As i posted on another forum, i think this is a smart way to fill up servers without having to use the ugly "server merger" tag. Everyone knows there are way too many servers so i understand going this route instead of panicking everyone with merger talk.

I don't believe unlimited, free transfers has been done before, though, so it's purely conjecture as to whether it'll cause problems or not. If I had to guess, it probably is one of those things that seems like it'd be a problem but actually isn't, just like cross-faction communication was. But we'll see.

Hopefully Trion releases some way for others to track where people transfer to, as well (like what Aion has). If the community is given that to work with, then a bad reputation will follow anyone anyways.

Overall, this is a better way to go about consolidating servers than having to merge them, and seems pretty ingenious in my eyes. Server mergers always look bad, free server transfers look good. Both will accomplish the same thing.

Yeah, but the only good thing Aion did with it was the part of their website where you could search for characters to look up if they transferred or got a name change. XD As long as we can see that, then bad reputations will follow anyone that's a jerk!

I think this is a "unique" way of handling server merges without using the actual words "SERVER MERGE". Those words tend to scare people or mislead them into thinking that the game is dying etc. I cannot imagine that they will allow free transfers weekly indefinitely. We'll see I suppose.

Ah! Well I'm in a somewhat shitty guild atm, very few people in it and nobody is actually using vent but hmm, when the server transfer comes around if it grows any bigger I'll let you know.

I think this will be a good thing for the game. Personally I'm in a pretty rock solid guild and am having a lot of fun. A lot of my in game friends quit after they couldn't get into a good raiding guild. This might help out the guilds that are sitting at around 12 or so solid raiders and need more so people can enjoy end game.
