People here will for sure tell you yes, but I think Paragon and Renegade Shep both have their moments and a fair bit for both.
I played Paragon but I did hit the Renegade button a few times (still ended up with maxed out Paragon stuff at the end of the game though) because some of those interrupts didn't really seem like 'renegade' actions to me, rather... just stuff I would do, like the one where you kill the krogan while he's talking when you KNOW you're going to have to fight him anyway.

Basically, Paragon Shep while doing a lot of Renegade interrupts is the way I'd suggest playing the game. Pure Paragon isn't very good though just kind of good, Pure Renegade is pretty good.

Eh, pure paragon has a lot less 'interrupts' which misses out on a lot of cool moments. Most paragon stuff is just dialog choices which you get anyway even if you do the renegade interrupts. You really just miss a lot of scenes going pure.

How does the import character system work? If I start a new game with my character in an attempt to get to level 60 before I buy ME2 today, do I have to get all the way to the end before I can load that character to ME2?

Also, how do I get it to register that I beat the game? I waited through the credits and my save file doesn't update(at least, not that I'm aware of).

yes, everything you do in a playthrough won't be reflected until you finish the game
