Maybe because it's vastly better? Click restart mission when you die if it bothers you that much, the main difficulty change in special edition stems from just being able to use continues, it's barely different otherwise.

Isn't DMD mode the same as regular edition? Cause that's all I really play anyway. Normal and Hard are just training for the real game.

Iirc they added an extra difficulty and basically shifted them all down one. Original Normal/Hard is now Easy and Normal. Very Hard and DMD are identical to the original in difficulty (well, original Hard = SE Very Hard) aside from being able to use continues.

Edit: Oh I'm retarded, forgot you can pick between Yellow and Gold Orb mode too, so it's functionally identical to the original if you pick yellow. Seriously why the fuck wouldn't you want the special edition? And as a sidenote, I really hope they include Turbo mode in the PAL version this time, no reason they can't now.

Just like Kiara explained, in SE Normal = Original Easy, SE Hard = Original Normal, SE Very Hard = Original Hard, and DMD is left untouched.
