Lost mah voice

Sooooo this has never happened to me before until now, but I lost my voice! I've had a hoarse voice....and stuff like that...but nothing like this. My voice is completely gone. If I try and talk it doesn't make much noise at all.

I had allergies all last week (HEYYY ALSO A FIRST, THANKS MINNESOTA) then got sick over the weekend (cold?) Then yesterday my voice was real low when I got to work. I work retail, so I was doin a lot of talking, and throughout the day my voice got worse and worse. Eventually towards the end of the day it was pretty much done for, and I just stayed in the back to work on stuff while everyone made fun of me. Luckily I didn't work today to see if it would get better but no such luck, think it's actually worse.

Anyways, just wanted some advice. My job kinda depends on me being able to yack it up and at this point there's no way I could carry on even 1 conversation and I'm supposed to go in tomm, then the next day, then day after that, and then the day after that, etc etc (jobs). Anyone had this happen before? wtf do I do? If it doesn't go away soon ima be pissed.

Gargle saltwater? Dunno, never had such an extreme case before from allergies or not. Is it raw/does it hurt? Saltwater should help with the pain a little bit. As far as your voice, don't talk if you don't have to, fuck everyone else. Explain to your manager or whatever and take care of you.

Seriously though, just chill out for a few days and don't overwork your voice. I generally drink sprite (it burns some times) but that's what I do in most throat situations.

Stop talking, don't even whisper. I believe whispering is actually worse. Just write notes, even at work, and hope your manager lets you do something that doesn't involve having to talk. If it's something more than just your voice being blown out from the allergies/cold then I don't have any other advice.

Whispering is worse for your voice. I also had a retail job and myself as well as a few coworkers had this happen at various points while I was working there. When it happened if we were lucky enough to be working with someone the mute people would just stock shelves or something non-customer oriented, but if you're actually required to talk you might just be screwed for the day(s) it takes you to get your voice back. Under normal circumstances it should come back very quickly though, unless you have some weird-ass shit.
According to this, gargling supposedly makes it worse. This is more like 'what not to do' than possibilities to fix it though... but it's not backed up by any evidence. Seems common sense though.

Happened to me once when I was working as a teacher. I had to go to the doctor, as I was obviously unable to work. All they told me was to be completely quiet for two weeks, and generally take it easy and rest. It seems to be a rather normal thing if you use your voice a lot and had an infection that you neglected.
